so im majoring in business administration information Systems.

Im still currently going through the less interesting business classes at the moment, however id like to start diving into resources to learn about my actual concentration area (IS).

what are some good links you guys can share with me?

also besides a degree and work exp during college are there important certs i should look into getting during summers or after school?
>>
Bumping.

Where you studying?
>>
>>1110259
currently only at a cal state (fullerton)
school was never a priority for me since i never knew what to major in. so my academics arnt the best to get accepted into good schools.

thats why i want to fill my time before graduating learning what i need to know to earn certs/other useful information. and I can get some relevant work exp working at my father/grandfather's company.

I'm sort of the same. I'm studying information systems in Canada 2nd year.
>>
>>1110275
is your major the same as mine with all the biz classes involved?
>>
going to bed, hopefully some people help with info for me to wake up to.
>>
WTF I am also ISDS at CSUF. I'm currently divided between teaching myself html/css and trying to work myself into web development or doing something with the SQL they teach us. Not sure what though.
>>

noice man, id like to learn some various forms of code, but want to focus first on IT infrastructure first to build my core assets to put on a resume. stuff with the network, security, data, and admin knowledge of windows/linux.
>>
>>1110950
well im assuming those are the general core areas, thats why i made this thread so i can find out what i should start with to learn and what certs will help me start off
>>
Going in the navy on an IT contract I'll get a few certifications and work experience. How set am I if and when I get out of the service?

Information Systems major here. Currently in my 3rd year

I'm not sure about your school, but I feel like a lot of unis that offer ISYS as a major tend to only provide adequate knowledge of how programming languages work. I'm working as an intern at a logistics company right now, and I'm having to learn .NET and C# along with VBNet (the only language my school offers in the business college). All of these are obviously Microsoft-based, and most systems I work with on a daily basis are generally Windows systems

Luckily for me there's a dot net usergroup that meets monthly near the college I'm attending, and many of the presenters provide some real-world application shit that I personally find a ton more useful than anything I've learned in my Information Systems classes so far.

So try to see if there's a DNUG near you, OP. Going to meetings like that is a great networking opportunity as well. I started going to them after my freshman year and I already have a handful of contacts that have opportunities for me once I graduate

cool thank you for the post mang.

Yeah np dude! If you have any advice on what classes you need to take feel free to reply

Hello, management of information systems 2003 grad here. I work at a fortune 50 company now overseeing some very large programs. My advice is to learn Excel like the back of your hand.
>>
>>1110245
I graduated with an IS degree 3 years ago. I wasn't a fan of writing code but lukily my school offered a track in SAP. Now I am an IT auditor and look at the security settings/ processes of companies that use all types of systems. I travel a bit and get to see some cool stuff, the pay raise has also averaged 15%+ each year.

Before I would recommend you doing anything specific, you need to figure out what you are interred in; as information systems is a very broad field.
>>
>>1111961
i guess trying to find a specialization is what i am trying to figure out. i dont really know how to start
>>
>>1111973
I got some networking certs which helped get my foot in the door however, they have little to do with my current job. I guess I am saying it won't hurt you to get one, but you will truly gain your skill set on the job, not while still in school.

Definitely try to get an internship under your belt, in addition to the work experience, it will help you figure out if you like a certain type of work or not.

I'm currently doing Finance with a bunch of electives in Information Systems (mostly programming and networking) and i've heard some good things about it. My programming classes were literally just CS classes. I feel pretty good about it but what's the job market like. What's a good job to start, i've heard business analysis is great but for a starter job I was thinking something more basic because I have no experience.

Australian IS student starting next week, specialising in security consulting, data warehousing, and business analytics here. I'll keep an eye on this thread if any ISbros want to get in touch.

Not OP but an IS major as well, what classes would you say are most important? I have two years left in my degree so I haven't even started upper division yet.

Aussie here,

What specialisations does your course offer?
>>
>>1112049

It entirely depends on what your school offers. Aside from taking programming classes, I'd recommend getting an SAP certification as well by taking any ERP classes your uni has.

For my uni ERP fundamentals is divided into 3 courses for a total of 9 hours. If a person takes all 3 of these, then they'll get their SAP certification. There are a ton of companies around my area that always look highly upon this.

I'd also recommend seeing if your uni has any classes that teach you the basics of visual studio. My colleagues and I use it on a daily basis, and if you're wanting to go toward web development you'll need to have a pretty proficient understanding of the fundamentals of it.

Also for both of you try to see if your uni has an association for information systems chapter (AIS). I'm actively involved in my chapter and I've gotten numerous interview offers solely based off of the fact that I have a leadership position in it. I go to a smaller uni so the responsibilities are pretty minimal
>>
thanks for the replys guys. and ya i think a internship or entry level job where im not expected to know the specifics but can be exposed to the whole workings of IS would be better to get what im looking for.
>>
Another ISDS major here, in my 3rd year after switching from accounting last semester. I enjoy it, and my university offers a data analytics graduate program that I want to go through.
>>
>>1112368
should have included at the end of this post that i still appreciate the replies, they have given me things to look into.
>>
>>1111961
>work with SAP
>raises average 15%
What a fucked industry.
>>
so how would this sound?

-complete bizIS degree (obviously)
-Choose one cert to study while in college, a general good one like CCNA or other.
-get a internship doing a entry lvl help desk so i get exp/exposure to the different compenents of IT
-Build a homelab, reading other threads on the internet tell me this is a good thing to do for ppl in my situation
