How are most congressmen multi-millionaires when their salary is only 174,000 dollars?

It doesn't seem to or even need to be as malevolent as corruption. Think about it for a sec and it will make sense why most congressmen are rich.
First the obvious one, it would take a lot of money to run for congress. It makes sense that people with a high net worth / wealthy social connections or family would run for office.
Second congressmen are influential. Their family members will have good jobs, their spouses will have good jobs. When they retire they will get fat salaries at a lobbying or law firm.
Congressmen were required to have a salary so that the poor could actually afford to run for office. The fact of the matter is if congressmen had no salary than congressmen would probably be even richer on average.

Have you ever looked at where their money is, a lot of them invest in companies that are directly influenced by them. They also get absurd amounts of donations and contributions from those organizations

And that's only their basic salary. Expenses will be paid for them, and I'm sure most of them are clever enough to have a side-enterprise or stock somewhere
