Why are they shilling about data science so much?
Because there's massive quantities of data being collected in today's world.

and that data, if properly mined, can be profitable for advertisers.

And also finance and machine learning.
When is the job market for data analysis going to decline?
>>1105701
It will probably be deskilled within the next decade or so. Then demand will go down except at those firms which where data is central to their business model (financial services, google etc...)

>properly
That's the key, isn't it? In my experience, they're more interested in making it say what they want it to than listening to what it's telling them.

As soon as everyone becomes convinced it's a good job and colleges get flooded with people seeking to become data scientists. So as soon as everyone realizes that the demand for engineers has peaked.

To sell you things.
They really are pushing this stuff on moocs like Coursera.
I'm in bioinformatics and recently quite a few bioinformaticians have been choosing to reinvent themselves as data scientists to get higher pay, all due to a highly overlapping skill set in some areas.
The trend is starting to have a knock-on effect of increasing bioinformatics salaries due to a falling supply of bioinformaticians too, so we might reach an equilibrium.
Personally I intend to stay in my field since I enjoy it and have a start-up to nurse.

I'd avoid it as a field if I were you. It has a very limited market, despite the shilling. The money in Data science was 5 years ago, not now.
