Sup /biz/ I'm a first year Applied Mathematics student in Europe, I'm getting good grades and by the summer I should be able to numerically solve basic differential equations in MATLAB, code in Java and Python, and know basic probability theory.

Does anyone have ideas for a summer internship? I don't know whether I can be useful to any company right now, but I really want to do an internship.

Also share your summer internship experiences ITT.

Where do you want to do it? Europe or America?
>>

I want to start out in Europe, and eventually work my way up to large American companies, doing a summer internship every year.
>>
What country are you in?

You've left it extremely late if you want to start applying for internships for this summer, also most internships want you to be in your 2nd year of studies going into third year and don't really offer internships to first year students.

Look on ratemyplacement in about 6 months there will be loads advertised on there.

first year intern will literally be doing nothing relevant, just try to get into a prestigious firm

although you're already too late for most, most summer internships for good firms fill up in december and january

Netherlands.

How about a smaller firm? How do I start now to set myself up to be a winner in life?

Ha! good luck m8. Large american companies only recruit from ivy schools like Harvard, and yale. No way they're going to waste their time with some twink from socialist Europe. You might have a small chance if you went to oxford or Cambridge though

Thank you

So not true, I interned at IBM last summer and there were people from all across the board school wise. They try to get a good mix of large public university students and smaller more elite schools. Those types of schools tend to teach stuff differently so its nice to have a mix so the interns can help each other out with learning curves

I'd recommend just sending out a ton of resumes to firms you'd want to work for on cold calls. While most of the spots are filled by now, there are a solid amount of spaces that get opened up because some steller candidate ends up turning down an offer around when the contract is going to be signed because they got an offer to someplace better. In those situations companies get desperate and will take anyone to fill the spot

I am afraid I will get the spot, and then not be able to help in any way. Do you know what kind of companies are looking for math students?
>>
>>1105205
I started there after my first year and had the same worries about not being useful. I was super anxious from the point I signed the contract until I arrived there, but everyone was really helpful about getting me started and helping me learn to get to the point where I was productive. Most companies aren't expecting younger students to jump right in and be super productive right off the bat, they see it as more of an investment in the future.

As for firms that hire math students, it depends on your interests. As for as I know, most of the people that do math are in finance or really cutting edge stuff, like machine learning and computer vision.

You should check if your university has a jobs page with internship listing. Thats a good place to start

start applying to anything that looks cool, you just need something to put on your resume and its already getting late for deadlines
