How do you learn how to deal with people... diplomacy, the human element. All that drama bullshit. What are some good ways I can train and practice that.

Just get used to it. Interactions get shorter and more efficient.
If you haven't already, read How to Win Friends and Influence People, it will teach you the art of dick sucking.

That book basically tells you to never ever be better at anything than anybody else so their feelings won't be hurt. I mean it completely destroys the middle ground between being an asshole and coddling fuckups.

You don't spend your entire youth in a dimly lit basement playing WoW and failing to develop social skills

Too late for that lol, exactly why I posted

So you agree with that, or don't? This is my experience everyone thinks they are a snowflake and has the answer, how do you let them feel that while still pulling the strings? Or do you just give them the law?

Working in retail helped me. I had to interact with the public all day. Once you've interacted with enough retards you'll stop caring what they think of you.

It's different in knowledge work like software development. They want projects finished. But if nobody else has a clue, you're not allowed to either. So the project fails and then there's a blame cycle that only ensures more of the same.

A development shop that hands out that book has institutionalized helplessness and absolutely should not squander the effort interviewing, much less hiring, anybody good.

That's part of it, but not the real message.

The real message is that the key to dealing with people is to see everything from their perspective and realise what they want whilst making them feel important.

I did want to second this. I worked retail both as an employee and self-employed. The nice thing about the latter was the balance between not having to do it (side gig) and being the only one who can (no employees).

But I still hate that HTWFAIP book.
