I'm curious if there will be any investment opportunities for normal people in the future. It would make sense that wealthy people and entities would buy up as much property as possible if real estate is the big thing.

I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of single-family, residential properties for "normal people." Large real estate companies will probably continue to manage large building, apartment building and industrial complexes.
I don't think housing prices will suffer much from any future turmoil in the real estate market. Large and expensive things like golf course, resorts, hotels, etc., will suffer terribly from a loss of value.

As interests increase and if the economy doesn't pick-up people be able to buy houses. They will only be able to rent and even that will be difficult may be difficult for people who don't have cash to put down for the first few months in advance.
