Biochem/Engineer major here. Is making bio-diesel using micro-organisms still worth cracking given the price of oil, or should I just focus on trying to invent and patent drugs?

What does it matter to you? You're just a student. If you're interested in microbes and just want to make money down the road, look at the cosmetics industry. Otherwise, learn programming/design and get any job you want when whatever successful industry opens up. People don't care about what you know anymore because we have computers. Gain as many skills and friends as possible and do what you're good at. I just got a regular bio degree and worked in micro, immuno, and analytical chem. It doesn't matter.

It can be worthwhile as the government still has a biodiesel/ethanol mandate that requires people to buy it. If you say, make it possible to break down cellulose economically, you basically have cornered the market.
Still, that is a tougher nut to crack than say drugs so far.

Petrochemical eng. Your plant must be competitive with biodiesel plants, that is, economic profitable, daily production, TIR, VAN, etc.
In order to produce biodiesel from non-oil sources, the higher the oil's price is, the higher will be your profit margin.
