dude if your a independent contractor you shouldn't be paying hardly any taxes. Dig through gas station trash to find cash gasoline receipts. Write off anything possible till you have zero federal tax burden.

well, step one, determine whether your itemized deductions will be greater than your standard deduction of $6,300. (I'm assuming your single here) after that it comes down to a bunch of other items like dependants and such, but at least this'll get you started.

CPA here. I pay a pretty low effective federal rate. Is it because of my vast tax knowledge or years of schooling? No, it is because I'm meticulous. I read every line of the 1040 to see how to lower my taxes and try to earn income in those tax advantaged ways. It takes patience and years of effort.
