Is there any way to make a profit in such a volatile market?

Is there any way to make a profit in such a volatile market?

I managed to get some spare money. I've put some of my money in low interest, low risk mutual funds, but I want to get my feet wet with stocks.

Would it even be possible to do so without losing all of it? What companies should I look to invest in? I've got interested in pharmacy and biotech stocks, but is that all?
