How do you negotiate the price of things to get a (more) favorable outcome, /biz/? Whether it be gym memberships, cars, buying used items online, buying used items on craigslist, etc?

Yeah I've noticed the tines I got the best deal where when I literally didn't care because I knew if I waited 10 days max I'd sell the item for almost double, which I had done 10 times prior which made me very confident.
But outside of that I usually fall flat on my face negotiating. Is it just a psychological game and I should be able to say no and stick with it? - even if I may not have many other options?
also for cash sales like cars and expensive stuff, just bring cash upfront, about 10-20% less depending on the item, and wave the cash. it works on desperate sellers
