What kind of jobs would be available to me if I got a PhD in Statistics? What kind of salary could I expect straight out of school?

Any job. $300k starting.

No, seriously though...

No he's actually pretty goddamn serious. Did you say a fucking doctorate in statistics? That is Priestegeous AS FUCK. The fastest and best paying jobs are analytics and data scientists....that's where you belong. You'll be making 150k with super good benefits MINIMUM STARTING (unless if you literally went to the shittiest school and have literally 0 experience).

Very good ass prospects, in the next ten years Statistics majors are in higher demand than computer science...you read that right.

mostly software dev roles, depends on how prestigious your college is and what your dissertation is on as well as how marketable you are, especially with respect to coding

you shouldnt expect much more than 100k usd for starting salary, and your first job might be around 80 or so. most data scientist postions are around there

your best money will be in getting a masters and then spending the phd time working up the corporate ladder instead, unless you're in the top 0.05% of phds and I mean you aren't lets be real

dont believe people who tell you its easy to get a top tier wallstreet or finance job, I dont know why people keep this myth going

its easy to get a job as a glorified software dev in wallstreet, but thats because the traders spend their time cumming in your mouth and making you beg for it. more than that is harder than getting a phd in the first place, and you dont need a phd for it

anything outside of law enforcement, in which statistics are racist

I have a masters in finance but every job I look at seems like soul crushing "oh thank god there's weekends" jobs.

Is it possible to get a laidback job doing data analysis? Would I need to go into another kind of masters? I'm looking to work 3 days a week tops. I don't want my life to be a mix of commute, sit and commute back 5 days a week.

Actuary

lol if you get a phd and become an actuary you're retarded.

Pretty accurate. Computers are becoming the new working class job and data is the field where you go home to your picket fence suburban house.

Im debating a master's in econ after working for a while. Wondering if it's worth.

A masters would be fine for data analyst. In that case your wages and ease of finding a job, industry experience is more important than schooling. Starting $100k is possible, but maybe a little high, in major cities.

PhD could help get the top data scientist positions. It is a super new field so experience is less necessary. But you would need to move to a tech center like San Francisco, or maybe Chicago, Austin or Seattle. Starting $150k, more in SF, once you finally find a job, which might take connections. (But so do most jobs, really...)
