Do you need to hit a certain amount of subscribers for you to be noticed and, subsequently, paid?

i don't think there is a monetization threshold anymore. you just won't make much money unless you have a lot of views per video.
the best way is to advance from there is to get direct endorsements, advertising placed directly in the videos themselves. You make a lot more money that way.

Either affiliate or pitching your own shit on the side. You can get away with a loss let "fans" that way vs trying to become famous when talking about a decent income.
