It will never go "bankrupt". The US banking system was bankrupt in 2008/2009 and look what happened.
Social Security is what keeps the US from becoming a Mexico.

It won't go bankrupt, but don't expect to be able to get anything worthwhile out of it in 20+ years so plan your retirement savings with that in mind.
I fully expect that they will either dramatically reduce the payments or inflate it all away, it mathematically cannot continue the way it is for a sustained period of time.

It's a Republican meme. See, here's their gameplan for pretty much anything.
1. Make really stupid and destructive decisions.
2. Watch those manifest in the organization's operation.
3. Use that as "proof" that the organization has never worked and will never work.
4. Put everyone in a worse situation by killing organization on behalf of voters who can't connect the dots (LA LA LA LA).
5. Fight against undoing damage by painting it as communism.
Take the post office. Mandate they prepay pensions 75 years ahead of time, heavily subsidize Chinese ePacket delivery, and close many physical locations. Watch post office run red budgets, raise prices, and deliver slower. DUR HUR POST OFFICE IZ BROKUN SOSHULIZM! So we shut down the PO...and lose mail pickup, lose local jobs, pay higher rates to USP/FedEx because no competition, lose legal protection (because tampering with USPS mail was a felony), etc.
Or we can go to SS. Charge old people only 1% for many years, steal from trust fund to pay for endless wars, keep giving senile layabouts raises irrespective of budget concerns or economic health (forget how they whine about working people getting a raise now and "the debt" while refusing to budget on wars, spying, government harassment and jailing of gays, pot smokers, etc), etc. So now it looks like a debt, even though it was paid for and is still being paid for. DUR HUR KIDZ TODAY SHULD WERK FOREVUR CUZ SOSHULIZM! So we end SS...but somehow not the tax, so people working today still don't have the money to invest but are also denied a government pension and ultimately that will have consequences.
