I am set to graduate in June with a four year degree and no student loan debt. I will also have around 6k saved by then. I have not worked during school, only summers. I come from a poor family (one income <20k for 4). Ask me anything about affordable college.

How did you do it?

And is it possible to study in College while living on your own without any financial help from your parents? I have to do this soon and I am not sure how I will pay for tuition + living expenses while studying.

Honestly, it is all scholarships. I applied to over 40 senior year of hs and ended up receiving 19k for my freshman year, not including state and federal grants. I go to a less expensive state school which also helps. Make sure to do your FAFSA soon to get money for next year. I was not an amazing kid in hs, I just filled out all the paperwork and received scholarships no one else applied for. I even got one for black students but they gave it to me (white) because I was the only one to apply.

Also, it is totally possible to do without parent support. I rent a house off campus with one other roommate and have a 3.5 GPA in mechanical engineering. Just apply for all possible scholarships. It sucks doing them but it is so worth it in the end.

Tru desu.

Couldn't I pretty much apply to every single grant and scholorship then and just claim "I am transgendered so I applied as woman" "I am in touch with my 1/64th black roots" "One of my grandfathers has known a native american chief peesnow"

Probably not as effective as you think. Most based it on quality of essay or grades. I can't imagine I would have gotten anymore for claiming a different race. May be useful for applying to college, but not scholarships. Especially when you have face to face interviews.
