Commercial software licenses are serious business. You shouldn't work on pirated software.

I've seen companies being fined hundreds of thousands of euros for working with bad Windows licenses.

If you're going to invest in making a video game, you should shill out some cash. And aren't there some free engines? Wasn't the source engine free or something?

That depends. As with anything you can only get fined if you get caught. There are some organizations that do nothing else than check the computers of businesses for bad licenses. But if you do a clean install on a computer with a proper license it's hard to prove anything was pirated in the past.

Look at Too Human and Unreal.

If don't do it properly and you get noticed, you're gonna get screwed.

Engines are free or cheap these days and mainly ask a cut of revenue.
