Sup /biz/

If I wanted to start selling clothes on bigcartel or etsy with pictures of cartoon characters on them, would I get into trouble for copyright infringement? The reason I ask is because I see a lot of people doing it with relatively small clothing lines (some of the people I know personally) and the only reason I've never done it myself is because of copyright infringement.

I'd hope to make this a side business run from home that brings me in some extra pocket money.

It's considered unlicensed merchandise. Etsy will take it down if you get caught. I believe the odds of being caught are quite small, especially if it's small time stuff.

If you're selling shirts with actual artwork done by official artists, then yes. However, if you're making your own unique graphic designs and not featuring trademarks then you'll be fine. There are more than a few artists out their selling their own shit based on known characters. Just be aware that if a company owning the IP DOES have a problem with it they can ask you to stop at any time. Disney in particular has been known to be especially ruthless in this regard.
