>get an email from my boss asking me "IF" I am "willing to do" some overtime over my entire christmas break. Ends email already assuming I have agreed to it with implied guilt trip if I don't.

wat do /biz/?
>>
Don't do it. Extra hours at Walmart won't help you long term
>>
Hello boss,
Pass.
I appreciate the oppurtunity, thank you,
A. E. Moose
>>
>>1008470

Act as if you did not receive the email.
>>
>>1008476

what if I get fired over this? Can I be fired if I ignore my emails?

>tfw I'm just a low level subordinate
>>
>>1008470

Simply say no. Say you're booked all Christmas season and can't make time for overtime work.
Will you both save shitty overwork as well make you look like a busy person who has valuable time that you can't just take whenever you want.

>>1008476
Worst way at going at it. Bosses aren't retards. They know when their workers are just lazy. The probability of not receiving an e-mail when from all others over the years you do is extremely slim. And even if it were true, the boss would still call bullshit on you
>>
"Hey _______,

I'm sorry but I'm unavailable to work on the days you requested as I've already booked plans with my loved ones.

Happy holidays to you and yours.

This is a good one.

Judging by the fact that OP said he's a low level subordinate, he's probably just unimportant enough to get away with it.

Do not ignore his emails. Be proactive and respond like so >>1008489

Just tell the truth. You can't do it. If you don't tell him what's up, you're that unreliable employee.

Truth conquers all.
>>
>>1008516

Or a proactive lie, possibly.

No one wants to work the holidays, you have to at least offer a fake excuse.
>>
>>1008507

You already got the best way to go at it and you're still considering ignoring the e-mail?
No you likely wont be fire from it. Your boss might not even mention it at all, depending on wether you see him everyday or not. He'll just put you on his list of lazy workers or leave a note in your file and when the company needs to cut back on jobs you're further on top of the list.

>>1008470
You haven't been "asked" if you want to work; you've been told to be there, but in a passive-aggressive fashion that makes the boss feel like less of a wanker.

Regardless, the business obviously needs you, so you do your part. Unless you're the kind of person who wants to bounce from job to job their whole life living paycheck to paycheck.

Working hard on that promotion, eh? I'm sure in 10 years you'll maybe be considered as a possible candidate. Without derailing the thread? I'll try:
* Acquire assets that make you money. (business ownership, investments, etc)
* Resist the urge to buy things that make cash flow OUT of your pocket (debt, mortgages)
* Keep acquiring these assets until you achieve positive cash flow, even without your salary income.
* Retire young.

You can always start another thread and get more detailed info. The book is good too.

Only NEETs think that going above and beyond means you're a corporate sellout. Why? Because NEETs have never been a part of building or growing a business, have never been committed to its success, and have never put something above themselves.

As a consequence, you NEETs will never know success, in any fashion.

Not to mention, that for most of you, "spending holiday time with the family" means "sitting on Mom's basement couch playing xbox waiting for someone to bring me a plate of cookies." Working on the holidays doesn't mean you have miss all your family events. It just means you can't sit around like a fat lump of shit for 4 days straight.

And this is why you'll be wealthy, never have a comfortable life, and never make your parents proud: you tubby fucks only think of yourselves.

That's not what Jesus taught.

He's stupid kid who is pretending to be an adult working in the corporate world. Managers don't care if you turn them down. They'll just get another bozos for the task. I always think these exchanges are a symptom of a greater issue: overvalued assets and loss of buying power--essentially neo-feudalism. Young people don't want to work harder for their employers because they've already been priced out of so much; why work significantly harder in the hopes of moving up when it's just as likely your employer will fire you anyway or you won't be able to buy a house anyway, etc. As assets get higher priced, the return on my harder work becomes less and less. I need to see a proportional increase in buying power. As a Canadian, housing is already well out of reach and barring a correction it will remain that way even if I made closer to 30$/hr. It would be careless for me to buy an average house unless I was taking home like $4k a month at least. Someone else can run the numbers here, all I know is I make around 25$/hr ish and I have maybe $500 extra at the end of the month, about 15% of my income. Because 35% goes to housing right off the top.

So when people keep overleveraging and our economy moves closer to a third-world style economy why would I bet on the future and work harder? Faith has been lost in employers and it's their job to offer an olive branch at this point in history.

overtime?

sir, this company offers its employees the PRIVILEGE of a salaried position

don't sully its good name with these hourly notions. this isn't a factory or a burger joint. this is a FAMILY. and sometimes family members have one another work 20 or more extra hours with no additional compensation.
>>
>>1008909
Sure thing buddy. I have two side businesses of my own AND work as a senior software developer for an SP500. My time is valuable so if anybody wants its, they'll have to pay for it. When I was leaving my last job my old manager told me I'll be needed to help with the transition occasionally. I said sure, but you have to pay me upfront at $200/hour (in contrast I was making $35/h there), interact etrasnfer it to my email. You should have seen the fucker's face. This happened at my going away lunch with the whole team present, most of them being cucks like you. Im two months when shit really hit the fan I got another email and a cheque for several grand. Took about four - eight hours of work to fix up the crap, and I never heard from him again. Good riddance.

Moral of the story is - don't be a worthless little bitch. Your time, your life IS valuable.
>>
>>1009260
Alright I realize I was harsh. Not everyone is in a position to walk away from a job whenever you want. This is the position you need to strive for.

The most important things are skills and connections. Essentially, you need to be capable of making a job for yourself at any point in time. You need a large financial cushion. If youre tied down with a bunch of kids, a stay at home wife and a 2,000sqft more of a house than you need this will be difficult. If you don't have this already - keep playing stupid until you do. Then startover at another place, but now make sure they play by your rules.

I'm pretty sure you don't have a FUCKING CLUE what anyone successful did to accomplish their goals and achieve their wealth. I'm absolutely positive you'll never be in that situation yourself.
