Could someone fill me in on business analysis as a profession?

I would like to pursue this after finishing up community college. I am going to finish my a.a. in business by the end of next summer and will be applying to a upper middle tier state school.

Thanks anons :^) Super helpful information

Sr Business Intelligence Engineer here

You'll do lots of SQL (including SSIS)
You'll do lots of reports (from Tableau to Excel)
You'll go to lots and lots and lots of meetings

What do you want to know specifically?

Thanks for posting porn on a blue board while I eat family dinner with the in laws, retard. Now I have to keep this window discreet. Normally I breeze right past porn pics. Fortunately for you I like talking about myself.

Apologizes anon, this is honestly the cheapest way to draw attention. I wanted to know what I should gear myself to study apart from SQL and Excel.

Should I brush up on any specific software?

Where should I go to make connections in order to improve my chances of getting a job once I am done with schooling?

Anything else you might think will be helpful...

I would say focus on data modeling when you study SQL. Learn the star schema.

And focus on performance. As you start writing queries, always run the execution plan to get an idea of what's doing the heavy lifting, and how to improve performance.

Any knucklehead can write a SELECT statement and it's easy to get a few crazy joins and sub queries in there. Or temp tables.

The finesse, and the big bucks, comes in knowing that what you deliver runs fast, doesn't fuck up the server, and is scalable to new programs and initiatives.

Excel is a shitty crutch but you'll need to learn it just the same. Learn VBA while you're at it. But for god sake don't tell people about it. They'll foist their own problems on you. When you use VBA and they day "how'd you do that" just say "oh I wrote a macro"

Learn stats dude. Learn them well enough to apply them. Outliers, standard error, median, mode, degrees of separation and so on.

Learn Tableau. Fuck it learn PowerPoint too. Learn presentation. But learn PowerPoint.

Be ... exacting. You're selling yourself as the smartest and most accurate guy in the company. Own that. Treat your career like a journey. You'll never become a SQL expert you'll just keep getting better and better.

I'm familiar with SQL from my entry-level startup job just querying basic data or splicing some joins together from previous code. Where do I REALLY learn SQL. Do I need college for this or are their resources I can use outside of structured learning? I liked my AP stats class in highschool but want to go into data analysis. Do I need a degree for this?

I don't think you need a degree. The truth is, most hiring managers don't even look at the degree. If they do its only for the tie breaker between two equal candidates and then it's just the name of the college. "Equal" meaning they have similar experience and both have good soft skills.

Where do you pick up modeling experience. Start with your own. Organize your music. Organize your reaction folder.

Maybe try volunteering. With a church or old folks home.

Get to know the DBAs and ask them if you can help or sit in on design sessions

Are there any books or structured learning I could get? Right now I can query and can do mid-level excel stuff (IFS statements and some low-level nested queries) I don't know where to begin in SQL, I am that query monkey you speak of.

I learned on the job. But O'Reilly makes good books so check them out.

You can download SQL Express for free.

Right now I bum off SQLyog community edition because I'm a Microsoft Fag

SQL Express is basically SQL Server but for the desktop.

Don't feel bad about learning Microsoft it's the most prevalent enterprise solution.
