What you are looking to import is dry bulk commodities. A ton is a drop in the bucket when it comes to dry bulk. Most likely one ton of salt would come in cardboard barrels inside a container, probably only a few barrels too. Dry bulk shipments generally are most of a dry bulk carriers hull or several large hoppers. There is no money to be made buying 10 several hundred lb barrels of salt.

First of all, $250/ton is not at all a good price if you're talking about standard sodium chloride road salt. It's actually not a good price even for calcium or magnesium chloride.

Second, if you're only buying one ton, the freight charges will eat you up. Freight may cost more than the product.

Find a U.S. based bulk salt producer, like Morton or Cargill, and arrange delivery through them.
