The problem with this sentiment is that the Japanese, whether they favored the war or not, were a united people with a shared culture. Sure, there are some regional differences, but for the most part, Japan is culturally homogeneous. The tragic irony of Japan's war against Western powers was that it was motivated by a desire to emulate Western imperialism. They wanted to be at the table with the West.

Islam is a highly fractured religion. The various sects all despite each other just as much as they despise the West. So while they're slaughtering each other, they're also lashing out at us.

You can blow up Mecca or any number of holy sites in islamic nations, but most of the people seeking to destroy the West could give two shits. It would actually delight them, because it would rally more radical muslims to the cause and, in their view, herald the glorious end times they want to bring about.
