The art is adequate, more than adequate imo. Its not especially detailed and it was definitely rough around the edges earlier on, but he had a style and he stuck to it and improved on it over time. Considering some of the abominations on the booru, I think Wolfram's art was pretty damn good by comparison. He also wrote most of the better stories that would go on to be made into good comics by other people.

Not quite: Initially smarties were simply herd-leaders, their distinctions were a more organizational and confident attitude and perhaps slightly above-average intelligence, and their stories were usually about their innocent failings as leaders.

In terms of rejections due to colour gradation, fluffy-bigotry is very new. Earlier, the point was that fluffies were all extremely loving, innocent creatures, and it was humans who valued them by colour, humans who introduced pain, hatred and evil into their world.

Eventually a few artists starting trending towards evil smarties and fluffy racism as being these immensely rare, headcanon specific aspects of their writing in which cruel fluffies were like these one-off bad apples.

This art would later be taken and spammed on /b/ by this one tremendous faggot a few years back, and every person who joined the fandom then did so because they saw a community that was designed around exacting a perverted sort of righteous justice, rather than a bizarro world in which otherwise sane humans simply had this fascinating unexplained moral blindspot regarding these immensely dependent, loving creatures. They joined for the former reason, and their just-started fandom-vigor began outpacing the older fans who enjoyed fluffies for the latter reason, eventually eclipsing them and turning the fandom into what it is today. This came complete with bogus info graphics explaining fluffies as "representing the worst in humanity", further reinforcing the cycle.

Exactly. That's why I always try to encourage new artists. I myself didn't draw much until I saw that with the quality of standard fluffy art even my works would get appreciated. Just be sure to do your best - people are willing to forgive a lot in the lack of skills, but lack of effort will ruin anything.

Also, if you draw on paper, be sure to finish the picture on a computer. Seeing even new drawings on paper is nice, but those are rarely worth saving and circulating compared to finished pictures.

The official site fandom is a difficult beast for some would be artists to engage with. Most shy away because they don't have a handle on what anonymous culture entails, or worse, they think do and charge in.

The whole thing is an interesting (relatively) new movement that is almost ready made for beginners to get a start at drawing. I sometimes recommend it here an there, with one glaring caveat. You must be able to actively maintain your own anonymity. If you cannot do that, you don't belong there as an artist.

A sufficient segment of the community is rabidly aggressive, and more than willing to drag and spam drama into the real offline life of anyone they take a dislike to.

So, one ignores that advice at one's peril.

It's also probably why we've lost so many early contributors and artists. While they are not targets themselves they are sympathetic to the experiences of other artists.

Wolfram took a little longer to figure this out, but even he seen the light. And the light sayeth: get good, move on.

CD appears to be the only artist who has chosen to continue in the face of a backlash.

So, sure, we need new blood. Just don't expect any sympathy if you choose to grab for that internet celebrity thing, and crowed turns on you. Abusing the artists is half the fun for half the fandom.

I'm not recommending people post their art as an anonymous user. It's OK to generate a throw away name-tag and upload everything as that.

But then they go and attach that name to their DA account, twitter posts, etc., or otherwise leave an obvious trail. Then some group with a bug up it's ass and a taste for drama comes knocking at the artists doorstep.

Well ... duh?

Artists do odd things for any number or reasons.

There's a famous opera writer who suppressed his own first three works, such that people don't often know about them being his today. His reason, to paraphrase it simply, was that they sucked.

Wolfram deleted all his old stuff? And this is somehow surprising?

Unlike Wagner, he paid for it with an active and aggressive backlash.
