Ive loved metal since 1998, it all sounds awful to me now. Its hard to be original when alot has been done already. Bands like Secrets of the Sky, Fallujah, Ahklys, Batushka make up for alot of what comes out now. But id recommend starting in the mid 90's to 00's.. Bands like Behemoth, Shining (Sweden), The Faceless, Forgotten Tomb and follow the youtube channels from there. Progressive imo is the gateway drug into harder metal
>>
>>694772021

My favorite metal is volbeat , warre dane, and ghost ship octavious. I recommend GSM, they are most progressive.

cheers

Not neccesarily progressive, but my favorites are

This isn't the right place to bash genres you don't like. And it's strange that you only like one genre.
>>
>>694778280
It happens to have a lot better composition and artistry to it, and strives to go in more creative directions, it's closer to prog rock.

Death metal, metalcore, screamo, most of the other genres of metal all sound exactly alike to me.
>>
Check out The Faceless, they`re more tech death but you`ll definately find what you look for in prog. Also it`s great to see so much BoO love, they`re amazing.

Power metal, nigga. No screams, guitar work is really fast, thus requires actual talent.

Power metal requires way less talent than technical

If you love deathcore, you'll love this. Consists of members from I Declare War, the ex guitarist of Rings of Saturn, and the ex vocalist of Infant Annihilator

Dan Watson - Vocals
Joel Omans - Guitar
BJ Sampson - Guitar
Yusef Johnson - Guitsr
Gordon McPherson - Bass
Aaron O'Toole - Drums

>sweep picking

Next you'll tell me that playing Dragonforce is hard

Also that has nothing to do with composition or writing. I even made fun of fast guitar in my original post. That means nothing.

>>
>>694779890
Playing fast is not hard. Fast does not mean good. Why don't you go listen to BvB and orgasm over trills faggot.

Anyway polyphia and chon are pretty good. I like between the buried and me for heavier prog
>>
>>694780312
There are so many 14 year olds out there that can play fast as lightning arpeggios or sweep picking or bends but can't actually play their instrument. Like really play it and not just wank.

And once more, it doesn't mean they can write worth shit
>>
>>694780503
Polyphia is basically like the backstreet boys of djent.

Literally girls came to watch when they came to my town because they are "hot"

Lead guitarist has a jew nose also
>>
>>694774837
My nigga. Also, periphery, erra, wage war, structures, tesseract, oceans ate alaska, uneven structure...really wish they'd unfuck themselves and come out with la partition already.

August Burns Red, counterparts, einsferum, finntroll, hatebreed, heaven shall burn, rings of saturn, kalmah, make them suffer, northlane, Parkway drive, the dillinger escape plan, thy art is murder, etc... They all bring something unique to the table. Prog is my favourite sub genre too but your being a Jackass elitist.
>>
>>694780789
Sweet dude, no problem. Enjoy.
>>
>>694780667
Yeah thats how they look though. The lead guitarist looks like a fag jedi, and the drummer looks edgy. Ive seen them live twice because chon was headlining.
Besides how they look I think they sound pretty good.

Composition and musicinaship aren't competitions.
Take a look at this for example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVcjf_p5pDY
Incredible atmosphere and a great story. At least for me, art is something that should make me feel things.
>>
>>694780967
I was outside in the cold, like in a beer garden section but would peak in a couple times to see them play.

>tfw was only putside bc i was talking on the phone with a girl who ended up leading me on
>when I could've seen them play

But their music is pretty good yeah, or well the old ones I listened to

I know that they aren't as 'heavy' as most mentioned in this thread, but Tool is a great band. Most wouldn't typically call them prog metal, I would like to think they bridge the gap between prog rock and prog metal.

I don't like most "progressive" metal because it takes ages before the good shit starts. Technical death metal is the good stuff, because they at least start jizzing all over my eager ears from the first seconds of their songs.

Out of things not yet mentioned, I do fucking hope you know Ne Obliviscaris, they're no-brainer for this category. Aside from that maybe Beyond Creation? I'm struggling to find prog bands in my playlist.

Dying Fetus is currently the top 1 most life-threatening band I saw live, I literally had to escape the moshpit to avoid being minced. The crowd was going absoute batshit insane, and it was hot as fuck, an ambulance came during the concert, I assume it was due to somebody getting heat stroke. Anyway it was amazing, I'll be seeing Dying Fetus again in a month on the same festival in Czech Republic.

Pic not exactly related, just one of my favorite songs.
