Ive loved metal since 1998, it all sounds awful to me now. Its hard to be original when alot has been done already. Bands like Secrets of the Sky, Fallujah, Ahklys, Batushka make up for alot of what comes out now. But id recommend starting in the mid 90's to 00's.. Bands like Behemoth, Shining (Sweden), The Faceless, Forgotten Tomb and follow the youtube channels from there. Progressive imo is the gateway drug into harder metal

It happens to have a lot better composition and artistry to it, and strives to go in more creative directions, it's closer to prog rock.

Death metal, metalcore, screamo, most of the other genres of metal all sound exactly alike to me.

Check out The Faceless, they`re more tech death but you`ll definately find what you look for in prog. Also it`s great to see so much BoO love, they`re amazing.

I don't like most "progressive" metal because it takes ages before the good shit starts. Technical death metal is the good stuff, because they at least start jizzing all over my eager ears from the first seconds of their songs.

Dying Fetus is currently the top 1 most life-threatening band I saw live, I literally had to escape the moshpit to avoid being minced. The crowd was going absoute batshit insane, and it was hot as fuck, an ambulance came during the concert, I assume it was due to somebody getting heat stroke. Anyway it was amazing, I'll be seeing Dying Fetus again in a month on the same festival in Czech Republic.
