I used to play those games back to back.
I almost always played as light side, I didn't have it in my to do the dark side stuff for a whole game.
I never got the real dark side experience, I'm thinking about doing a real dark side run through now that I'm more capable.

I've got about 40 hrs in KOTOR II. I really didn't like it as much as the first, the characters were nowhere near as interesting and the whole story was just less intriguing. Maybe I should start over and see if I like it more...

KOTOR II is a lot bigger, there's just more stuff to do.
There's also Star Wars history wherever you look, and a lot of it connects to the events of KOTOR.
I liked the less dark and less post-war setting in KOTOR, but KOTOR II has better gameplay, and everything has more depth.
I also thought that the characters were great. You can spend a lot more time with their dialogue and learning about them.
You also have more options to romance your crew if you're into that. Some complain that the female romance element isn't as good as the male romance element.

That's something that pissed me off. KotOR II was not as good as I in terms of story (obviously my opinion), but it got all the better gameplay stuff because it was a sequel. Kotor I doesn't even play in 1080p :/

I also liked I's story better than II. But I like the world of II better, and I like how it holds all of the smaller stories in it. I also like how II ties in the the world and stories of I.
So because of that, it's worth playing back to back.

To be honest, it's fun to escape reality and immerse myself in a different world, play my friends, or give me something to work on.
