Pans are hardly the cooking tool you should splurge on.
Get yourself a decent mid-range set, a good chopping block, and a nice set of knives and you'll be good to go.
A medium and large pot, a skillet or two, and a cast iron skillet. Roasting pan and dutch ovens are good too. That is pretty much all you'll need besides other random things like tongs and micro-planers
Also, not spending $280 on a fucking pan doesn't make someone poor. I wouldn't spend that much money on a god damn paint brush, and those ate things I really need.
