Traditional Karate is glorified kickboxing, and Shotokan Karate is basically just a collection of a ~200 moves that you are supposed to memorise and that will never come in useful in a real fight. Tae-Kwon Do is just Shotokan with better kicks. They're probably the best ones to teach to children as a beginner course to martial arts in general, but they're not something that you should take serious as an adut.

you have to do self defense and not a sport. karate, kung fu, judo, boxing, muay thai, thai boxing, french boxing, and so on are sports, so you will never learn the best and most efficient techniques.
jiu jitsu (brazilian is a sport too) and krav maga are the way to go. if you have angood trainer he will tell you what each technique does to the enemy's body and if it's lethal if applied properly.
havent tried aikido or ninjutsu, but those seem decent to a degree, too.

being fit certainly helps you in a fight, but nit knowing any techniques will fuck you over so much more. i had tons of fights with buff people, taller and heavier people and i am your typical 4chan nerd. skinny, not too tall, overall weak. but i did martial arts all my life. like this i was able to outperform most of my opponents. i did a grapplibg match once in my early teens. my opponent was a fatso that i just could not move. turns out he has a lot of muscle under that fat but has no idea on how to use them.
the match was completely retarded because up to that point i did only very little grappling and couldnt use my techniques because of the rules. somehow he ended up lying on top of me and it took me 5 mins to get him off. looked like gay sex probably. anyway, i was able to get him into a choke hold of sorts and he gave up.

what i am trying to say is technique will always win against no technique. you being fit has nothing to do with the martial art. if i had to fight mike tyson i'd be dead probably, even if he does the most inefficient kind of martial art, but he perfected his techniques and is buff and fit as hell. he also has tons of experience.

Modern forms of jujutsu (American style hybrids/ standing versions) or aikijutsu styles which incorportate striking and weapon techniques. But those are my personal preferences based on my stature. If I was bigger I might choose something which focuses more on strength and reach rather than speed and techniques

K, so I've taken so many martial arts, some for many years. Here's my advice. If you want to take karate, you have to understand the differences in style, and technique. My personal favorite is a (not very large) style by the name of Isshinryu, there's a lot of focus on self defense. Goju-ryu is also good. For JUST wanting to improve on combat skills, your best bet would be to find a gym that teaches both BJJ and Muay Thai. They exist, and they're legendary. If you're in the North Carolina/Virginia area by any chance, look up Gustavo Machado's.

Get a gun and carry it if that's legal.

Otherwise:

Run away. If they're surrounding you, use boxing then run away. If they're holding you, use BJJ or judo then run away.

Also don't try to disarm anyone unless they're going to kill you.
