A good book on programming fundamentals will probably help you a lot if you haven't done any programming before.

Bullshit.
I started at 30k after an internship.Once i got my CCNE, it was all uphill.
I'm the reginal network admin/engineer for 6 different divisions. I make 180k after 4 years in the industry

Fuck your forced bias

Self taught programmer. I don't do it as a job anymore and now it is just a hobby.

I quit doing it as a job because I really like making small games and applications, and learning new technologies, languages, etc. Doing it as a job took the fun out of it for me. I now work in a steel mill 3 and a half days a week, and I spend a very large portion of my free time programming.

I'm 100% self taught, and know C/C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, PHP, a lot of experience with SQL(MySQL/MariaDB mostly).

For anyone looking for advice on how to learn and get better, the best I can give is to examine other peoples code, learn how other people solved problems in their applications and apply it to your situations, and most of all, keep trying. If you can't figure something oht, or you can't get something to work, just keep trying different solutions until one works, take that experience and build on it in your next project.

Most jobs out there want "3-5 years of relative experience". That statement is bullshit, I'm not saying having worked at other companies won't help you land a job, however, if you come in and can show your skills, and have a good portfolio of the work you've done, it shouldn't be hard to get a job. Contributing to open source projects and even creating your own open source applications is a really great way to gain experience that employers will be able to see your work in a finished project.

No, you're like every other programmer/designer
You learned basic syntax that can be applied to ALL languages.
Then you pull out your reference book and find how you want to implement it, and how

You cannot possibly belive you have learned every single possiblity.

>Any developers, software engineers or computer science students here?

KEK

Of course, because almost every anon claims to be a self-taught web developer.

I'll be blunt with you and all idiots ITT: if you don't have an above average IQ, IT is NOT for you. Go flip a burger, or go get a degree by retaining and regurgitating information.
>>
>>694203522
I didn't say I have?

No programmer knows "every single possibility". I'm saying to take your past experiences and ways you solved problems then and try to apply it to whatever you currently work on, and use all of your past efforts to help you figure out the current problem.

Saying that self taught programmers rely on reference books is incredibly ignorant. Some people are smart enough to learn things on their own.
>>
>>694203797
By sticking to it, I learned fluently over a few years. The key is actually having something to make. If you're just programming to learn, you'll never learn.

>>
>>694204039
Yeah kid, calling you on your bullshit. You may know the basics, but when you're put in a real position to make something more then just gaymes and guis for cli that are not needed, youll see you'll need help having to impliment a new call/function to get your program working.

Like you NEVER googled ANYTHING when you were "SELF LEARNING".

You're not hot just because you think you learned how to program with no references.

EVERY actual programmer has a reference book(s), or a pdf/ebook/google docs/ w/e

Not all at once, ofc. But is it really that hard to believe? Once we've pushed a project out the door and shifted the team onto different things, the next project has different demands.
Unless you're publishing papers pushing the boundaries of software, this shit isn't all that hard, just time consuming.
>And if youre really a jack of all trades developer? Enjoy your $40k mom and pop shop salary.
Whatever you gotta tell yourself.
>>
>>694204473
You literally just said I'm not a real programmer for having googled something, and then immediately said every "actual" has some kind of reference.

I didn't say I don't google things or that I don't use references. I don't solely rely on them to copy and paste code from, which I feel is what was originally implied.

Obviously I forget what header a specific class or method is in every now and then, or I need to lookup the documentation on what a specific thing does.
>>
no, but I've had some exposure to coding and wow oh wow turns out I'm not smart at all.

>>
>>694199923

Is this a test for one of those coding academies or something? What Javascript joined() does doesn't matter at all, it takes 20 seconds to look it up on w3schools.

If I were to interview someone, I would not give a fuck if they knew the joined function or not. They can assume there is a function that does this task if they need it, but I don't care if they know joined() or not.
>>
>>694203976
why are CS/IT kids so arrogant? It isn't rocket science. If you have an above average IQ study Physics or Math (more in-depth than the discrete math you learn in CS).

I love when people debate languages, because anyone who actually has a solid understanding of computer science is pretty much never going to debate wether a language is "better" than another.

It all depends on what your end goal is. There are plenty of things I would use Java over C++ for, while there are plenty of things I'd use C++ over Java for.

While i do agree, the context that 99% of faggots use to validate it as programming.

It is more then just html5/css
If you're taking professional standards.
You're going to have to interface with some sort of database, you're going to either use python/ruby/perl to do most of the work behind the scenes which is presented nice and tidy via html/css.

So it is more
