the romans were good but they stagnated and then when it collapsed a lot of their progress was lost. tbh it was pretty obviously the brits - modern science, systems of government and justice, industrial revolution etc. they basically set down the framework of the modern western world

The British Empire

>United the Indian city states
>Founded modern America
>Founded modern Australia
>Founded modern Canada
>Introduced law, education, government and public transport to dozens of countries
>Invented modern world trade ports
>Invented the train
>Introduced canals as industrial transport
>Invented the Iron ship and the twin hull
>Founding fathers of world democracy
>Introduced hospitals
>The Commonwealth
>Abolished slavery
>Invented Greenwich Mean Time - by which the whole world sets its clocks.

Mongolian Empire.
Not the nicest bunch of people, but they connected the east and west. This prompted the move of technology pivotal to the European enlightenment period.
>gunpowder
>printing press
>making anime real
>spaghetti
Now you could credit Marco polo with the European "discovery" of the far east, and say that the silk road only extended to the middle east and west Africa. Both are true. But it was this land route that negated the need to travel months and sometimes years around 2 giant continents by boat. And it was the cultural osmosis between near east and west that lifted Europe out of its dark age.
So why Mongolia, again? The age of Mongolian supremacy led to the most peaceful period in the Caucasus mountains and Gobi desert. There was no other feasible way to run a lifeline between east and near east and then, by proxy, the west.

>invented concentration camps
We didn't invent concentration camps.
They existed long before the Boer war.
The ones we did have held prisoners - they weren't extermination camps.

>didn't create roads and transport systems between towns, only between strategic locations for the Empire
Actually the British did oversee the building of roads all across india. We also guarded our trade routes and ensured the safety of our workers - most of whom were paid and housed.

>purposely induced famines in India killing 20m+ people
This is a myth - the famines of British India were caused by recorded poor weather and poor crop conditions. They happened before British rule, and after as well.

Keep trying though - i'm sure uniting your country, democratising it, trading with it, and giving it law, order, technology, healthcare and industry was probably a bad thing in some way...

Not Rome. I too made the common mistake of assuming that because Rome grew enormous and extremely wealthy, all manner of wonderous innovations came from it. Then I actually spent a few years studying history, and found out how wrong I was. Rome so believed in conquest that it nearly all of the great innovations often mistakenly attributed to it came from elsewhere though conquest, most of them not even intentionally, but in a haphazard, careless way that cost every civilization including rome itself dearly. Once the Jews rolled in (thx u jews) with their old egyptian treasure cache, Rome suddenly became quite good at law, and incredibly rich. But culturally, it saw no point in pure research, and never understood why the greeks did. Rome scored its innovations through conquest, destroying other cultures, and once back, if sifting through the loot some soldiers grabbed from a sacked town, there was some curiosity that piqued interest, it may be put to use, but often times, those innovations sat on shelves for generations before someone noticed them and took an interest in them.

The #1 thing Rome "contributed" was the idea that a total power/total wealth scheme could be a fucking animalistic domineering asshole for a while. before tearing itself to pieces from within and without. But we already knew that because Carthage demonstrated it when Rome was still an obnoxious neighborkid. Hell the only reason we have any greek philosophy, politics & law at all is because after Rome destroyed it and killed everyone worth a shit, a few soldiers safed some of their work in a pile of other junk, which was ignored for centuries until someone picked it up as a curiosity and went, "hey, you remeber these guys we destroyed, listen to this shit, some of this stuff is breddy gud".

Basically rome was shit. Just a very big, and fairly long shit.

It;s still my favorite place, but fuck it if they weren't barbarossa.

Or the Byzantine Empire, which was a government and military institution set up by the Romans.
"Greeks" did not have an empire, because when you gather a room full of Greek people together they fuck each other to death.

Well, Merkel is done as of 2016.
Rising german right-wing sentiment has a year left to get a reasonable sounding candidate together to score the position.

After that, France will walk from the EU, and if France goes, so will go NL and Sweden. ...Leaving a euro union comprised of Germany and a bunch of debtor nations to it, which germany and brussels both have a vested interest in managing economically and defending from a growing russian threat to the east. At that point, might as well call it what it is, a new de facto german empire.

Without doing a fucking thing to directly pursue it, this scenario could land square on germanys face.

From before history until 1905, the Chinese Empire endured while all others fell. It took 250 of mismanagement by corrupt foreigners, the combined might of the strongest nations of Europe plus America, and three civil wars to topple it. Even while they were busy killing each other in the longest and bloodiest civil war of the 20th Century, they remained independent in the face of a decade long foreign invasion.

And the goddamned commies are pretty much running things like the Chinese Empire has always run things.

For 6,000 years the Chinese didn't advance at all in technology. Still living in stick huts when the Europeans arrived in steam ships with rifles.

Objectively the empire that added the largest number of inventions and the most high tech inventions is the American empire. From internet, electricity, air flight, submarines, moon landers, Mars rovers, etc.

The Chinese invented simple things that cavemen could make like spoons and eating with sticks.

Codeword for failure. You know who actually made all those things work? Americans. Germans couldn't accomplish anything. At the end of WW2 they were still using the same fighter planes they were in 1933 and they never even developed bombers. Worst country ever. At the end of the war they were far behind the tech curve.

>>
>>694183695
No because they did not share in on the culture and civilization. If you're looking for genetic homogeneity, I suggest you test your own dna. The sooner you get the cultural shock out of the way, the better for yourself.

The Greeks invented humanism. Period. I won't bother with any particular inventions, the theatre, the Olympics, or the fact that they almost brought about the Industrial Revolution many, many centuries before Westerners did. They brought the divine down to our level, making Gods human and Humans divine. Plus, every scientific school of thought can be ultimately broken down to Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates.

You can dislike the modern Greeks. Not because they mixed with everyone (just like your own people), from Italians to Arabs and Slavs. But because they no longer adhere to the same core values as the people who lived there 3000 years ago did. But that's as far as you can go. Wanna piss on classical Greece too? Fine by me, but there's a reason every Dark Age we've had was characterised by the fact that the majority of people turned their backs on classical culture and civilization.
>>
>>694184434
Let's not also forget leaps and bounds in medical advancement. Most modern medicine is based on German research.
>>
>>694185132
lel

Chinese invented simple things, like writing, printing, gunpower, chemistry, artificial psychedelic drugs, anaesthesia, and the wheelbarrow.

The wheelbarrow is always the one that gets me. No one thought of it until the 3rd Century AD, until some Chinese guy needed a better way to carry shit on plank roads sticking out the side of a mountain.

Boeing reproduced the Horten 229, charcoal surface texture and all, and found it was indeed stealth after all, not to modern systems, but to the crude systems they were aware the brits had at that time. As well, they designed it specifically to not have any vertical surfaces so it could hug the channel low under the radar, pop up at the last second, and remove the time the limeys had been using to respond to the attack.

First steath plane.

It's in a restoration hangar near the Air & space museum at the moment. I just saw it last weekend. The us army got the planes and most of the engineers, who were put to work and made their way into the skunkworks team. Where they continued their work on up through the 1970s, on aircraft our military still flies. Including stealth craft.

The British computer thing (Alan Turing) was an incredible accomplishment, but don't overstate it. It wasn't a truly programmable computer, because it wasn't fully Turing complete without user interference. It was meant to solve a particular problem. Also, despite what was shown in the movie, he had more than enough American help.

The Americans made the first truly programmable computer, the Colossus. However, NONE of this matters because the programs were classified and destroyed.

The computer had to be reinvented (starting off of some of Turing's work) by American's in the private sector, but this took a long time.

USA turns out being the primary developer again.

You don't know much about the LHC in Europe. The size makes a huge different. They needed to develop massively parallel computing architectures that were not required for the previous, smaller projects. Comparing the 1940s accelerators to the CERN LHC is like comparing Sputnik to Hubble. No comparison except for vague, immaterial similarities.

Every bad thing the British Empire did (and it DID do) to it's colonies was no worse than they were already doing to themselves. However, by enjoying the effects of the Empire, they ended up better off. Stop whining that they didn't do MORE. They didn't owe the colonies more.

The Dutch literally invented modern banking and the concept of joint stock companies. When it comes to business they contributed hugely. And this is excluding all the Dutch artists and scientists of the early modern era who also made contributions.
Portugal on the other hand didn't do much and their most signifigant accomplishment is HUE HUE HUE.

In history, human development has been increasing exponentially for centuries - right now, more progress is made in a year, then in a century in say the 10th century AD.

So, from this point of view, the USA, most definitely.

All time wise - really hard to say, perhaps Achemenid, Qing and Macedon.

>>694187907

America built the world's first massive LHC in the 90s. Beat Europe by 20 years, like always. Then conservatives in the US government shut it down because they were scared that too much science might make god disappear.

> Implying that 'modern' banking was developed by the Dutch when our modern system was entirely redeveloped in the 90s
> Doesn't understand that the Italians, yes the FUCKING ITALIANS, contributed more to modern banking than the Dutch. From Debit/Credit to all of the core rules of accountancy.
> Counts business contributions as a contribution to society. Sure, keep workin' those spread sheets.
> Names 'Dutch scientists', but unlike everyone on this board, he can't name any damn inventions they produced
Opinion, except for the Portugal bit, safely discarded.

Your only claim to inventing computers was Turing, and while he's great, there is a reason that most early computers and all of the personal computer era were American designed and produced. Second, Brits didn't even contribute meaningfully to the Internet, moron. It was developed in it's first version as a US DARPA project and then spread through US universities. England contributed less than Japan on it. Moron.

^ This is actually true, but if we're going to split hairs, the Scottish Enlightenment was more responsible for American ideas than the English.

Clearly it was the Greeks. No question about it. Some say that it was Aristotle that contributed the most.

Aristotle wasn't very influential on Greeks. His writings were better preserved so he had a very large effect on medieval Europe. Greeks is a good argument for influential civilization, but OP asked about science/technology, and the Greeks are WAY beaten out by the Romans on that.

>Seriously, if the USA was an empire that would be the answer,
The US is an empire. Do you guys understand how big the US sphere of influence is? Russia and China are sammiched in next to US supported-Asian countries, the crazy Middle-East, a bunch of unstable nations that used to belong to the Soviet Union, a US-funded NATO, a democratic India, and enough aircraft carriers to carpet bomb yella fellas back into their holes.

Who else can even field a threat? A white country similar in culture? South America is their unstable, non-threatening neighbor. Africa is a non-threat.

Nah, dude. I'm the biggest pro-murica conservative you'll meet, but just read the Federalist papers or any of Adams' writings: they were thoroughly drawing from the British traditions. America basically did British better than the British did and lived in their shadow intellectually for nearly a full generation.
