The game sucks. It is sort of fun for a week or two, but then you realize there is no point to it

It is Ingress with pokemon graphics.

No multiplayer features. No actual battles. No real benefit to controlling gyms, aside from a few more EXP points, which give you a higher level, which is pointless.

The game is crap.

It's no surprise that you are seeing so many people meeting each other at parks. It's the only way to meet other players, because it is a piece of shit app without any messaging or friending features.

You know, there is actually only one problem with this game: the hype around it. It could be a nice little game, but it is that all these stupid people think it's the best that makes it so fucking stupid.

Sure, people are focusing on their phones a lot but this is finally bringing people (even people in their 40's and 50's, I've seen) out of their houses, away from their televisions, and out there. It's good exercise in some cases and as soon soon as the battle system is made less shitty and trading is added, it'll be great socially as well.
