Need your opinion on this /b/

My birthday is coming up later this month and I'm expecting to get a couple hundred dollars to go towards something I want. At the moment I only have two major wants. A Nikon D3300 (~$400) and an HTC Vive ($800)

I don't have a job so special occasions like this are my main source of income aside from some graphic design and misc things I do to get money from my parents. I also have an Xbox One that I never use which I'll probably sell for a couple hundred dollars.

If I were to buy the camera I'd be able to make custom textures for any 3D projects I work on in the future as well as maybe find a new hobby. Also I'd be able to take better pictures on family vacations and such, however I don't know much about photography and this would be my first DSLR.

If I were to save up and buy the HTC Vive I'd get to own a Vive, obviously. I already have a capable computer so that isn't an issue and my room is big enough to play most games. I know I like gaming so there isn't any uncertainty as with a camera and I'd imagine between me, my family and my friends we'd get a decent amount of use out of it. Under normal circumstances I'd just go with the camera and wait longer to get a Vive (Or maybe wait until the second generation so I don't waste any money on first gen) but I have plans to go with some friends to PAX East next year and I'm expecting them to have alot of VR Demos and I'm determined not to try VR until I own my own headset. I feel like if I try it at a demo I'll need to buy one ASAP and I'd rather be able to play VR whenever I want and not just at events.

TLDR Should I get a camera for making custom textures for 3D my models or an HTC Vive for playing VR. Going to PAX next year and don't want to spoil my VR Virginity, already have a capable gaming PC and decent size room. Next to no form of income outside of special occasions and oddjobs.

Hold off on the VR.

VR is nowhere near ready yet, it's the alpha version of most of them and it will be another few years until the bugs are out and the games are in.

It would be more of a "I have a Vive" bragging rights, while the camera serves an immediate purpose
>>
>>694087148
I figured it would be similar to PC parts. If I buy a Vive now for $800 I could probably sell it for like ~$600 when gen 2 comes out

Instead of 18-55 kit lens get yourself a 35mm 1.8G lens, no zoom but great IQ for price. Pretty much an essential nikon lens.

Vive is awesome, but if you don't have the PC horsepower, go for the DSLR.

I've got the D3300 with kit lens, takes great pictures but video is meh.

I've found great pleasure in this camera. Sample images (Slightly edited, highly compressed) can be found here https://www.instagram.com/tdp_equinox/

VR still has a LONG way to go, but regardless of what that guys says the Vive is pretty impressive, and if you're really interested in being at the cutting edge of VR it's a very workable system. Nothing like the old DK1, DK2 days.

I doubt there will truly be any solid VR content for a long time, so only do it if you want to develop yourself.

Also, make sure you have plenty of room to use it. Bigger the better. Do you have 4m x 4m to work with?

And though you may think you have an adequate system, the minimum specs are pretty worthless for some things. If you don't already have a 780Ti, and are ready to get a 1080Ti when it comes out, you don't have a "capable PC". VR is just murder on these things, especially with the shit unoptimized stuff that's out there.

Just my $0.02.
>>
>>694090203
Meant 980Ti
>>
>>694088918
OP wants it for images. Video, yeah, cannon.

Nikon's strong suit is images. Takes great images. Lenses are cheaper and more available, etc etc.

stop being a fan boy you cuck.

I have an i7 4790k, Gigabyte 970 (Can apparently be overclocked a fair bit) 16GB Ram. Definitely willing to upgrade whenever I have the money

I have about 5-6ft behind me. Bed can be moved so I have like 8 feet and there's like 10 feet of space to my right.

>>694090158
Nice pics anon, these were all shot with the D3300? How is it in low light? I was planning on doing some long exposure shots of stars and such at night

>>694090472

You can't do a lot better on the CPU (but you'll still end up CPU bound due to shit coding).

The GPU won't be enough for many things. Vive isn't all that good at handling under frames. Code your own stuff and you can optimize for what you have.

You'll want more than that space once you start messing around with it.

But hey dive in and have fun. If you like VR you'll have fun.
>>
>>694091011
All but the first two pictures were shot with the D3300 kit lens.

It's alright in low light, but if you want to do astrophotography, you're going to want a faster, fixed aperture lens, the kit lens can see at night but it has trouble pickup up gas clouds.

In regards to never using a DSLR before, if you're at all tech savvy it's pretty easy.

Iso as low as possible (Reduce image grain/colour loss, the lower the number the less sensitive to light it is)

Aperture (lower number means more open, lets more light in, gets more background blur. Higher number, more in sharp focus, lets less light in)
Most of the time you can leave this at the lowest (Most open) in the goal of keeping ISO down.

Shutter speed (Exactly what it sounds like. 1/120th is a good all around speed, very little blur if you have shaky hands) Longer shutterspeed lets light in for longer. Causes blur if shaky.

I understand my GPU is a bit underpowered for VR. I'm not expecting to be able to run everything on ultra 10000 FPS but I'd imagine I can run most things at low-medium with 90 frames.
Pic related is my room, sorry for noise/mess. Pic taken at night with my shitty Kindle. I have about 7x7 feet there and if I move my bed it'll be 10x7'.

>>694091741
I know most of the stuff on the technical side of a camera, I just have no idea what makes a good shot and what makes a bad one. I understand the rule of thirds and three point lighting and whatnot but I haven't got a clue how to frame a shot
>>
>>694091741
You can also put it in auto mode (I prefer without flash, as the pop up flash sucks) , and it does a good job too.

I like to shoot in auto when i'm constantly changing scenes. Don't listen to the elitists that say you have to use it in manual or you're a noob.

I'd much rather get the shot and adjust in post (was going to do that anyways) than be mad at myself for not adjusting fast enough and missing the shots
>>

>>694092390

>>
>>694092101
Ah well then you're already off to a good start then.

As far as composition goes, just do different things.

A shot is boring if it's shot at eye level. Anyone can take that shot. See something interesting? Get in close, go for the low or high shot, take an interesting angle on it. Go from every possible angle you can think of.

It's hard to give too many tips on shot composition without imposing my own methods into your style. that's you're thing, do you boo boo.
>>694092290
People who want high quality images that can be manipulated in the way they want. The people that take your wedding photos, the cool photos you see on the internet of the stars and the gas clouds. Do that with a fucking cellphone, i'd LOVE to. DSLRs are big, loud, and fragile. But nothing beats them.
>>
>>694092101

The thing people don't realize about VR is it's 90 FPS all the time everytime, or nothing. You'll hate it when it misses, especially on the Vive. If you have control of the code you can dumb down the graphics to make that. If you're relying on someone else's code you're screwed.

That space sounds really small. Is that even the minimum? Vive is all about walking around. That's where it really stands out. You start teleporting around because you have a small space it breaks the immersion.

I'm voting the camera. VR will be a lot cheaper and better. This generation is still bleeding edge, so only do it if money/space is no object.
>>
>>694092609
Alright, thanks anon! Even though most people seem to think I should just get the Nikon I might save it all and wait until Pax to see how much I enjoy VR and if it's worth the $800.

>>694092743
I get that it has to be 90FPS always or nothing. Apparently if it dips below that it gives the user severe nausea or something?
I believe the minimum is like 3x3 feet, at least thats what I've heard.

3x3 ft will be for standing experience. While Vive supports that, might as well get the Oculus at that point. You'll be missing out on everything.

There is a minimum to calibrate it in room scale, but I don't remember what it is. Something bigger than 2m x 2m. And really you'll quickly want as much as possible. Walking around is cool, and there are still some demos that ask for a lot of space.

Are, listen, right? There are a lot of games you can entertain yourself with right now. Get that portfolio, apply for that thing you want and do that. Being able to better yourself and make your own cash is much more fun then VR porn, normal porn'll have to due.

Sidenote: if you have a solid in-come, you won't need VR Porn because you can just get mad bitches with your job money, my dude. But if no gf, you'll still have cash to buy a VR, and most likely a better computer.

>I'm determined not to try VR until I own my own headset

That's silly. You are either going to think it's the best thing in the world or you are going to think that was neat, but I am not going to spend $800 on it. Either way, when you try VR, you will know for certain whether the DSLR or VR headset is what you want.

Personally I think VR is just a novelty at the moment. Wait until there are some fun AAA games that use the technology. By then, more advanced VR headsets will be out that will have better features and possibly a lower price.

Why would anyone play this game?? What type of self respecting Pokémon fan would actually spend their time and money on such a bastardized version of pokemon! You should all be ashamed... Unless you're all just casual mobile faggots who've never actually played Pokémon... But anyone who has ever played Pokémon should not support this monstrosity. There are 4 aspects that make up a Pokémon game: Hunting, Capturing, Grinding, and Battling, this game satisfies 1 of those categories. The capturing is merely a Pokémon Paper Toss game, the grinding is accomplished by paying real money, and the battling is done not with the classic Pokémon battles mechanic that requires actual skill and strategic, it gets replaced with tapping on your phone screen as fast as possible wins.... It's disgusting, whoever pays the most money wins... You fake gamer fans supporting this disgusting sellout by Nintendo releasing a half assed sorry excuse of a game after promising to never release a shitty half assed mobile game and sellout with micro-transactions. I urge you all to open your eyes and uninstall and rally together to send a message to Nintendo to not fuck us over with half assed games!! There is no reason why this game shouldn't have the same classic Pokémon battle mechanic!

That's why I might wait until PAX to buy the Nikon or the Vive but I don't know if I want to wait that long.

Another thing to consider is depreciation. Once the newer generations come out, that VR headset is going to drop in value a lot. On the contrary that DSLR is still going to hold value for many years.

That's true but it's the same thing with new generations of graphics cards. My 970 probably isn't worth as much as it was when I bought it but does that mean I can't still sell it for a decent chunk of change? Of course not

Computer hardware has a tendency to depreciate a lot faster though. A GTX 580 was $500 in July 2011 and now five years later you can pick one up for a little over $50. I don't know if VR headsets will fall as fast, but five years from now that Nikon D3300 is still going to be worth at least half of what you purchased it for.
>>
>>694097419
But my point is when the 2nd gen Vive comes out I can probably sell my 1st gen for a decent price and invest a bit more into it to get the newest version. Tbh I should really just try to get a job but no one near me is hiring
>>
>>694097540
just because no one is looking to hire, doesn't mean no one is hiring. Get out there, working is great. If you can find a job you like doing, its even better.
