My theory:

OP's parents hated OP, so much so that they never bought him pokemon cards or pokemon games as a kid.

He was always known as that no-pokemon-card-kid, and was a result of a lot of bullying. Everyone wanted to link their gameboys with him to trade, but he was a loser with no game.

He eventually grew to hate the genre (but loves COD, or WoW), and figured he'd never be left out of the loop from a craze ever again.
