PEMDAS is divided into segments of priority.

It goes P->E->MD->AS

First you do anything in parentheses, then do exponents, then do multiplication AND division, and last addition AND subtraction.

The 'MD' and 'AS' are to be done statically, not in order. This is where people fuck up thinking that they need to do all multiplication first, then division. No, it's at the same time, so basically you just do it in order of how the problem is written.

Multiplication and division are done in the same step because they are the same operation. Likewise with addition/subtraction.

a * b / c is the same as a * b * (1/c), so doing either first doesn't matter. Ambiguous equations like this are intentionally designed to cause confusion because they leave out parenthesis. In its current form, it's not ambiguous, people just choose to look at it differently and favor one operation over another, or insert additional rules.

a / b * (c + c) is not the same equation as
a / (b * (c + c))

It's pedantic to a point, but specificity is very important in math.

i am not against the pic either. common core is fine. five times three is NOT 5 + 5 + 5. it's 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3. multiplication is NOT always commutative. 2 + 2 != 4. 2 is defined as 1 + 1. 4 is defined as 1 + 1 + 1 + 1. therefore, 2 + 2 equals 4. you have to be that deliberate and exact.

there is a "classic" question asked at IT interviews; "you have 20 steps to walk up. you can take 1, 2 or 3 steps each time. how many DIFFERENT ways can you walk up the stairs?". you could spend hours writing out all possible permutations and fill notebooks but they want an answer in 3 minutes. this is discrete math and it's what common core actually prepares you for.

this pic is stunning but it's also a reminder that "both" are "equally correct" in SOME CONTEXT. teaching children that order of operations can DIFFER based on CONTEXT is a major synapse builder in growing minds.

(20/5) * (2 * 2)/1 Then it will indefinitely be 4*4=16
However, if it were to be shown like 20/5*(2 * 2) then it would be automatically assumed that the 5 is multiplying the bracket, giving the answer of 20/20 = 1.

The only reason that there even are "possible answers" is because of how vaguely it is shown so the best way of going through the question is by questioning the details to see if the question requires certain details.
