I was so shocked by how much I actually liked the book. The pacing was great and the characters and themes were so understandable That I had a blast reading it. Would recommend.

I have only heard bad things about this book.... Like not to offend, but I have heard its really bad scifi. like if you want better go read old mans war. IMO

The Hobbit
Lord of the Rings: The Unfinished tales

Currently about to start The Brother Karamazov by Fyoddor Dostoevsky. Apparently it's up there on the best books of all time.

The Brother Karamazov book is really interesting, if you learn a bit about what russia was like during the time period it really helps give some light into what the books message is . It can be a bit odd honestly, but good.

Definitely a good book
But it sufferd in my eyes when the author, on two occasions, pushes his atheism in the readers face for no reason.

I could understand if it was part of the character and their development, but it isn't! Literally both times he mentions it feel like they have no bearing on the story other than to just push it in your face.

Fight Club reminds me, what was that other book by Palaniuck(sp?) about the aspiring writers who believe they were chosen to go to a resort style facility to be pampered while they write, only to be locked in an abandoned theater and pretty much left to fend for themselves for 3 months? I remember the chapters alternated between what was happening with them, and short stories they were writing at the time, and you could see in the short stories how they became progressively more insane as time went on. It was great in how it alternated between almost horror-esque and hilarious. I really wish I could remember the name but the title was really generic.

>>
>>693928433
the movies were fucking garbage
eter jackson thinks he's a better writer than Tolkien and took it upon himself to re-work the entire story from beginning to end; there was not one scene in any of the movies that could remain faithful to the books without being altered in some pointless way
>>

It reading like the bible is kinda why I liked it. Yeah it was dense, but I liked the way to felt like I was reading an actual historical book instead of a fantasy novel.
>>
>>693928540
That cunt is NEVER going to release that book. I mean it, Never.

He's on too much of a gold mine, and will milk it for the next decade or more with console games, RPGs, movie deals, side story novels.

Because if he ever writes the 3rd book and it's a let down from the first two, then his entire francise and cash cow will die in the ass over night.

I gave up on the 3rd book coming out years ago. You should probably realise it never will too.

He is under too much pressure for it to be good.

Haunted. The first story set such a fantastic tone.

Palahniuk is great. Choke was terrific as well. Pygmy I found to be a real strange story but his ability to maintain that narrative voice through the entire book is a testament to how deranged and talented he is.

Diary was creepy too.

Well reading classics can really give you a better understanding of the evolution of culture. Plus it allows you to have a new conversation piece if its ever relevant.

If you are having trouble reading then try Audible. I hardly ever read anymore, but I listen to books whenever I drive anywhere. I've managed to knock off tons of books that I never thought I would read and it really expands your knowledge.

Plus there is always nonfiction. There are some nonfiction books that are absolutely beautifully written and are a true pleasure while adding general knowledge about any topic that interests you.

And of course it makes you look smarter when you are a regular reader. Just dont one of those douches who cant stop talking about it and ruin it for the rest of us.
>>
>>693929148
I started reading it when I was a teenager, so I wasn't all that patient with books like that, eventhough I had loved Camus and Sartre. I don't know about the English or the German version, but the French text was very slow-paced and a bit boring, dare I say.
>>
>>693929173
Not a worry, enjoy. If you like weird in the same vein, Neal Stephenson has some good novels, and I'll probably be called edgy, but Bret Easton Ellis has the same nihilistic slant that Palahniuk has, a bit less humorous. Given all of the Patrick Bateman shit all over /b, I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned.

As an individual I don't read as much as others (at least compared to those who consider themselves bookworms), however when I love a book I LOVE the book, and read it over and over like a fucking autist. These are the titles that fell victim to my odd habit:

Here's a few I'd consider quiet masterpieces:

Stoner by John Williams, possibly the most poignant book I've ever read.

A Kestrel For A Knave by Barry Hines, utterly stunning. One of the few book endings to upset me.

Alan Sillitoe's Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, the story is simple and modest enough but every now and again he'll hit you with some narrative that'll just blow you the fuck away.

Pretty boring, actually. It's good German, but it's a bit convoluted and he does ramble about a lot of stuff you don't want to read about.

Meh. Writing's a bit pompous, but the lore is awesome. No coherence, though. Also, the second part is boring.
Still a better read than the Qur'an.
I prefer the Silmarillion anyway. Writing's better, same for the symbols and the story.
I think Iluvatar is much more likeable than Yahwe. Hell, I'd be willing to venerate a god like Iluvatar who lets me do my own shit and all.
>>

Thats fair enough. Some of his books i cant read but those i get into draw me in to a new world and i cant put it down. I was like that with 'Under the dome' only took me a couple days to read. I agree with the anon that brought it up earlier, the show is fucking garbage
>>
>>693933379
Try his Bachmann stuff, I like most of it more because it feels kinda raw and unrefined.
>>

In terms of nonfiction I love Einführung in das funktionale Übersetzen, by Christiane Nord, her take on translation is unique and very interesting, much more than René Ladmiral's "théorèmes pour la traduction". I'm also a big fan of Il Principe, the Art of War and the Gallic Wars. There's a book about ancient Germany I'd like to read as well.
>>
Call me a meme, but I've greatly enjoyed Game of Thrones so far. I loove medieval/fantasy stuff, and GoT is just about up the with The Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit for me.

Herman Hesse. Apparently he's a genius.
Since we're talking German litterature,

You could read Conan the Barbarian. The writer is the one that started the whole Sword and sorcery (S&S) subgenre of fantasy.

Oh for sure, just start somewhere and it will build. I think you might surprised how much reading can become the most healthy addiction you have ever had. Pick subjects you're interested in and stick with it. The biggest obstacle is not finishing a book because you become lazy. Force yourself to see it all the way through enough and it will be a lot easier

The prophecy foretold of a great man that will rise up from the ashes of concentrated piss, and surf on the waves of all the memes, to climb to the top, and bring chaos to the orderly world of Fourchannia.
>>
>>693934609
Basically, two gods that are also one create the world for the kicks, but since their powers are complementary, they can't do a thing without one another, so they have to argue everytime they want to add something new, because they have opposite views, one is very orderly, the other very erratic. Eventually, one of the two fucks his brother over and that triggers the creation of many unplanned, unspecifiec species.

>>

>>
>>693932548
I Am Legend was awesome. Nearly didn't read it because of the movie but the whole thing was brilliant.

Scott Smith I have enjoyed as well. The Ruins and A Simple Plan were both made into relatively decent movies (I thought the Ruins was much better than it should have been) but both novels are beyond terrific.
>>
>>693934799
>another fucking prophecy
You, sir, are a fucking genius. I think anyone here who writes books should consider following your mock synopsis.
>>
To Reign in Hell by Stephen Brust. I liked it but I'm into that sort of thing.
>>
>>693934835
Sounds cool. Good basis for good and evil. God moves in passion, and rests in reason. Thus creation is only manifested when they argue and play, and jest and take bets.
>>
If you are into well written novels about eastern culture, and if you're on /b you probably are, The Ninja Cycle books by Eric Van Lustbader were really good. Hard to get into, but good.

>>
>>693935078
Thanks.
Well the whole idea behind making them brothers is to deconstruct good and evil based on religious principles and to ask the question of morals again. I'm a firm believer in intelligent fantasy, so I try and put interesting debates behind my stories.
I really like that : "God moves in passion, and rests in reason." ...And I just realised it's a quote from Khalil Jibran. You go, based anon, Khalil Jibran is the shit.
>>
>>693935377
I'm getting a tattoo which can be seen as similar to your take on creation. Two equal dragons, twined around a cross. Time for some bad life choices. And yes, kahlil is bae

thanks a lot man, will do.
got 11 seconds by paulo coelho lined up next which was a present from a friend.

i also like books who teach me some lessons about life
>>
>>693935377
Also, have them as brother and sister. But never mention it beyond the introduction. Thus the reader always has to wonder who is doing what. Thus again based on morals, not gender, and the question is put to the reader.

Ready player one. Its a hell of a good read.
>>
>>693934219
Fantasy wise there are a few different D&D settings that were turned into novel series'. Lots of different writers contribute their own characters and events to a massive setting. Each setting is fairly similar in regards to magic and races, but their own separate world map/locations, deities and entities within the world.

The major ones I'm aware of are Eberron, Dragonlance, and Forgotten Realms. I think FR is currently the one with the most active writers, and it's the only one I'm currently familiar with. It's got some decent authors but not a whole lot of great ones. Still, overall it's nice to have a world that feels alive and ever-expanding.
>>
>>693935750

Oh yeah there are plenty of those. The hardest part is stomaching the books trying to teach you a lesson you dont like but those are the best. There is nothing like hating a books philosophy until the end when you suddenly go 'huh' that kinda makes sense

>>693935756
Not sure I can do that very well. I write in French, so I can't use something like "siblings", I always have to say "brother and sister" or equivalent.
Also, there's a point where they very distinctly separate from one another, that is when one of the two betrays the second and cuts him. At that point, only one has a real will, the other is himself torn to bits between the various parts of his own personality.
