What kind of pussy med student gets addicted to alcohol and not morphine?

Seriously though tried Morphine? that shits amazing.

I like dalmore 12 year old when I can get it. Love scotch. Other than that, I usually buy brokers gin and red wine. I like oxy too.

I think I had a gallbladder attack a few weeks ago. I had it happen before and I was diagnosed with sludge. After the initial attack the pain became dull. Right now it just aches a little on my right side close to my ribs.

I started taking taking bile acids to help dissolve what might be causing the pain. If I did clog a duct in my pancreas how long does it take for it to turn into pancreatitis?
>>
>>693590432

No clue I'm not a doctor I'm a first year med student. Go to a real doctor not /b/ for medical advice.
>>
>>693588462
How the fuck do you balance school and being an alcoholic. I went to school when I was drinking non-stop and I couldn't hang whatsoever.

Also have you ever considered quitting drinking? I went to an inpatient program a few months ago and it wasn't all that awful, life is pretty damn great now.
>>
>>693590236

Actual doctor on surgery here. Pancreatitis doesn't generally kill you. It just hurts you a lot and we watch you until you get better.

Having said that, pancreatitis can cause things that kill you (SIRS related shock).

Wtf is this "diagnosed with sludge"? Do you have cholecystitis or not?
>>
>>693591588
>>693591588
http://www.everydayhealth.com/gallbladder/sludge-in-the-gallbladder.aspx
Biliary sludge is a mixture of particulate solids that have precipitated from bile. Such sediment consists of cholesterol crystals, calcium bilirubinate pigment, and other calcium salts.

The sludge or pre-stones can go into the pancreas and clog a duct.
>>
>>693588462
Soo, back on track, you became aware of alcoholism before or after you went to med school?
>>
hey OP, i'm studying to be a drug and alcohol counsellor. do you want to stop drinking?
>>
>>693591066

Then go to the emergency room anon.
>>
>>693592093

Before

>>693592181

No I don't think so. I don't care about my well being.
>>
>>693591993
Yeah thanks mate.
Problem with biliary sludge is that it's a radiological finding, not a diagnosis. It makes no more sense to say "diagnosed with sludge" than to say "diagnosed with cough".
>>
>>693592306
no worries then man, keep doing yo thang. hope you're happy!
>>
>>693592318
so youre saying its just a symptom, is that right?
>>
>>693592181
I think people gotta make that decision on their own mayne
>>
>>693592318
Okay, well I am not a doctor so sorry for the misstatement. I felt bad pain before and all they found was sludge. My doctor said sometimes the sludge can clog a duct.

das why i was asking mayne..

you're welcome. don't forget it's never ever too late to change things up, even if you end up as a crusty, salty old 55 year old man with no friends, family or dreams left. life can always get better and rock bottom is a lie. rock bottom is prison or death.

also nice trips.

Word

I actually have considered looking into a similar field/career path after going thru all my shit, being a recovering alcoholic, and experiencing treatment.
>>
>>693592306
I think it's important to care about your wellbeing before you start taking care of sick people, otherwise your problems may affect theirs. Healthcare isn't the best choice for people who relieve their stress through self harm in any way. Still, a lot of time and hope ahead of you

So, I've got this thing where I get blood-injury syncope when it comes to circulatory stuff. Blood being drawn in particular. So, to combat this I've done reading on hypovolemia, major vessels, arterial bleeding, bloodletting, all this kind of thing. First time, this stuff almost makes me faint. Now Im sort of used to these wikipedia articles.

So my question is do you have any other recommendations for reading that will trigger this so I can overcome it. Wanna get over this thing via immersion therapy in case I'm ever around to need to administer first aid, accompany a family member in hospital, all this thing.

Cheers
>>
>>693592574
If you want to be pedantic, it's a "sign". A symptom is what a tells you. A sign is what a doctor can objectively confirm. Biliary sludge has a wide range of presentations and consequences.

>>693592652
If the pain isn't terrible right now it'll prob get better. I wouldn't worry about getting treatment unless the pain stops you from doing normal activities or you start turning yellow. The whites of your eyes will be the most noticeable place to look for it.

Technically your diagnosis would be "biliary colic secondary to mild obstruction" but that's a to-may-to/to-mah-to deal

CAGE
C = tries to CUT back
A = Annoyed at people who bring up drinking
G = Guilt feelings about drinking
E = Eye opener, needs to drink in the morning

..thats about all i learned about alcoholism in med school so far.

Why do you think you are drinking so much?
>>
>>693593523
Yeah.. that causes syncope. Feinting, out cold. Correct terminology not really what I'm asking for besides that. So, any recommendations?
>>

>If the pain isn't terrible right now it'll prob get better.

Yeah it is just an annoyance at the moment, thanks for responding.

I just assumed you wanted to know the correct term because of how you were using all these formal terms that you've evidently researched incorrectly.

I picked a good night to log on.

Other alcoholic med student here. Hello!
>>
>>693593785
Not OP, but that's pretty spot on. I've never heard that one before.

I think a lot of people have a hard time with the distinction between being a heavy drinker and an alcoholic.
>>
>>693594388
CAGE is standard alcoholic screening. Anyone positive for CAGE usually is referred to specialist drugs and alcohol service for more in depth assessment and management.
>>
>>693594164

literal opposite of what I'm asking

Psychiatry, family medicine, or dermatology. Not sure yet.

Sorry to here that. I've been going to a therapist since starting med school and its been really helpful... all the Type A personalities, high school-like social dynamics, plus all the fucked up humanistic people shit and the vapid Tinder-infused sex life make it pretty useful! Have you been going to a therapist?
>>
>>693595166
Nowadays a lot of medical symptoms/diagnoses/treatments base on mnemonics of all sorts, O SHIT is my favorite.
>>
>>693594948
Sorry mate, on the scale of "patients with problems I might care about", your problem is waaayyy at the bottom. That's all I got.

>>693595561
Highschool never ends.
But when you actually have patients to take care of, all you need to do is to be good at then. Then you don't care about any of the other shit.
>>
>>693588462
Does visiting GoneWild still count as reddit faggotry? I've always been curious.
>>
>>693595538
Eyes on the prize, mate. We'll get there.
>>
>>693595561
Beat me to it, was gonna suggest maybe even seeing a therapist. Shit can help
>>
>>693595847

I don't think so. You recognize her? Probably my favourite GoneWild camgirl.
>>
>>693595638
Well you can't just leave me hanging I gotta know what O SHIT means too.
>>
>>693595561

I haven't, no. Don't plan to either honestly. Never really felt comfortable with one.
>>
>>693596169
Has to do with how to treat an acute asthma attack... as with most mneumonics I can't remember... O is for oxygen... and the rest are names of different meds
>>
>>693596122
She's only been posting the past few days, right? BaskinThrobbins or something.
>>
>>693596169
http://www.rewarm.co.uk/2011/06/acute-asthma-management.html
>>
>>693596489

Yeah that's her. She sexy as fuck. She sometimes does albums when her boyfriend is playing videogames right in the other room (he doesn't know she posts nudes). I email with her sometimes considering she's way hotter than the girl I am fucking.
>>
>>693596218
I get that. But I still encourage it... if only if you know you want to change. Just dive in and accept that you will not feel comfortable. For me, it often ISNT comfortable. I dont like talking about myself and I often think my therapist doesnt know what she is talking about. But, when I look back, I have been able to handle things differently and make changes. However.. you being a medical student, you KNOW where alcoholism will take you eventually.
>>
>>693596716

I get drunk 3-4 times a week. It has not been affecting me too much.
>>
>>693596716
>>693596716

But thanks for your concern anon. I appreciate it. Right now I have my drinking under control for the most part. I will cut down slowly.
>>
>>693596880
what would you say to a patient with the same feelings/story as you?
>>
>>693596218
I get this 100% I never liked therapists, still don't, and don't use them eventho I prob should. The only reason I was suggesting them as well as the other guy was cause I know they DO help some people. Everyone is different.

Regardless, I wish you the best of luck with the drinkin and with school. Also I commend you on being able to keep up with both cause that shit was impossible for me.
>>
>>693597305

I would tell them to get addictions counselling.

>>693597361

Thanks
>>
>>693597455
sounds like a good idea.

I love you medfag. take care of yourself, eh?
>>
>>693597455
YW

Just curious, I saw you said you drink like 3-4 times a week, when you do how much do you drink? Do you experience any withdrawal symptoms when you don't consume alcohol?
>>
>>693597819

5-10 shots of liquor couple glasses of wine. No withdrawal symptoms.

>>693597703

Thanks man, you too. Good luck.
>>
>>693598156
Well that's good that you don't get the withdrawals that shit is AWFUL.

Couple more questions and I'll stop bugging you, sorry this kind of stuff just peaks my interest. How long you been drinking? And how often, if ever, would you say you black out?
>>
>>693599098

Been drinking for about 6 years. I don't blackout.
>>
>>693599469
Eh, I wouldn't say you're too bad off then. Not that I have any like medical or professional background to base off of.

I'd fuckin kill to be able to drink a cpl times a week and not blackout. Nope 1 beer then next thing you know it shit goes completely off the rails, and I'm asking everyone wtf happened.
>>
>>693599815

Are you sober now or just have very low tolerance?
>>
>>693595561
Another med fag here.

There was no tinder when I was in med school.

Make the most of it
>>
>>693599990
Oh I'm 127 days sober now, and it's awesome.

When I was drinking I had a pretty high tolerance, I just can't fucking control myself and 1 drink turns into madness.

One thing I can say tho is when I decided it was time to cut my shit out I had to make that decision for myself. People bugged me for years and that shit don't work when it's for them.
>>
>>693600392

Any tips for someone who wants to go to med school but sucks at math and has not taken any chemistry or physics?
>>
>>693600469

Well, I am happy that you are sober. Keep it up.
>>
>>693600714
Thanks man. That booze ain't no joke.

Idk if it's been asked yet but how far along in your degree are you? I'm a semester away from completing an associates but no longer have any interested in the major I was going after.
>>
>>693601092

I have 2 years left. What major are you contemplating?
>>
>>693601184
Well I was pursuing my paralegal, just kinda not what I was expecting. Also the whole law society where I live (wyoming) is pretty small, and just not my kinda folks. I had initially wanted to be a lawyer, but I didn't wanna dump thousands and years of my life into something only to find out I didn't like it. So doing a 2 year paralegal followed by working a year or so for a lawyer to see if I would like it or not became my plan.

I have all of my basic prerequisite credits done tho so it's not like changing majors if/when I do ever go back would be a huge setback.
>>
>>693601575

Understandable. You live with family? A girlfriend? Got anyone at all?
>>
>>693602104
Yea, I'm back staying with family since I got out of rehab till I can get my shit fully back together. Was living with the GF but I felt like I needed the more "controlled environment"

I def will go back at somepoint I'm just working 12+ hrs a week right now so it's gonna be some time.
>>
>>693602451

Well good luck man.

>beta fag starting his first year at med school.
Is first year really that difficult as everyone says or is it manageable?
Also, how do you guys feel about carribean med schools and the people that come out of them?
>>
>>693604100

Carribean is notorious for just being subpar. A couple of the schools are good and some grads from there can be good, but overall, the reputation is not good and if you are considering going international for medical school I would strongly suggest you look at Ireland, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, hell even South Africa.
>>
>>693603631
>are you me?

for real tho, outside of the 21 part my run started at 15 and went to 25. But they said I was an alcoholic so I'd say its safe to say you are too. As far as danger probably lol if not with health then just with your actions.

If you ever detox, I'd make sure you do it in a med facility.
>>
>>693604389
I had to retake half of my undergrad bio classes and had a shitty mcat score, doubt that any other place would give me much of a chance. Otherwise i'd have to spend another 3 years with a post bacc

You would be surprised. Also DO schools may have been easier. But hey, what's done is done. Good luck and enjoy your time in the tropics.
>>

did you pick medicine to help people, the money or because 'why not'?
>>
>>693605787

First option. I don't care much about money, I already come from a family that has enough so a high paying career was never the motivation.
>>

>>
>>693588462
are you finding med school hard? is it what you expected?
>>
>>693604568
well yea, i started drinking when i was 10 but at that time alcohol was hard to come by. i'd get drunk on the weekends and was smoking weed as well.
>>
>>693606276
Yea, the heavy daily drinking started at 15 for me mostly because of my living situation. I left school, my mom moved states and I moved in with her ex who was a super drunk that was happy to have someone to drink with.

Honestly if drinking is something you are worried about health wise and whatnot I'd look into it. Not telling you what to do, just gonna say now that i have my fuckin life has improved exponentially.
>>
>>693606155

What a stupid question. That implies I need help to begin with, which I don't, but even if I did that does not make it impossible for me to treat others. Piss off.
>>
>>693606268
>>693606268

Yeah. A lot of memorization but it is what I expected. I don't think anyone expects med school to be difficult.
