How smart is /b/?

Without looking anything up, explain how ocean tides work.

its how the earth spins innit?
the moon has gravitational pull and based on what time of the day/month it is, the moon pulls the water in our out

moon pulls the water from the clouds then the tectonic plates shifting pull the water into the earths core and then hot water rises

there is probably some truth to this actually. my mom works as a labor nurse and she used to say that when theres a full moon out they get a lot more patients

En the side of the Earth that is close to the moon the gravitational pull is stronger . Pulling the water slightly towards the moon = high tide. On the other side the water is farther away from the moon making it less pulled towards the moon resulting in another high tide .. Done
>>
Tides are caused by the pull of the sun and moon, primarily the moon, as it moves throughout the day. High and low tide can flux multiple times through the day, but spring and neap tides occur throughout longer periods of time. Spring tides mean tides are more extreme low tides are lower, and high tides are higher. Neap tides are less intense, high tides are lower, low tides are higher.
>>
>>693525685
the moon, I learned that from a doctor who episode lmao
>>
>>693525685
gravity of the moon causes tidal bulging, as certain spots are closer to the moon. as the earth spins this bulge moves along with it. in addition to this, warming caused by the sun's rays force convection currents that circulate the deep, cooler ocean water with the warmer, surface water.

Something with the way earth is spinning, the moon gravity pull, wind, maybe underwater earthquakes? Ancient alien tech?
>>
The orbit of the moon around the Earth isn't a perfect circle. It's an oval.... or elipse maybe is the term I'm looking for? Anyways when it's closer to the Earth in it's natural orbit, the gravitational pull is stronger. Gravitational attraction increases with mass and proximity, right? So When it's closer, the water in the ocean not being an actual connected thing to Earth is pulled more out towards the moon. This causes high and low tide.

Right?
>>
>>693525685
The gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the moon. Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the moon (and away from the water on the far side). Since the earth is rotating while this is happening, two tides occur each day.
>>
>>693525685
The moons gravitational pull on the ocean. And some other science stuff that I forgot
>>
>>693525685
It's a combination of the Earth's rotation and the orbit of the Moon, with the Moon playing the greater part.

The way it works is that the gravity of the Moon causes a bulge on the near and far sides of the planet, which causes the water to raise up.

That's about all I remember.

This. I have to retain a healthy skepticism, but my Fiance works at a hospital and she dreads when there's a full moon. Also her grandmother had bipolar disorder and I can also attest that before she died, around the full moon she was a fucking nut job (more than usual).

As the earth rotates tides are created by changes in speed. Faster rotation = higher tide, slower = lower. Centrifugal force, same as if you take like a bottle half filled with water and spin around with it extended.

Natural convection. Hot air rises in the day due to buoyancy and sun radiation. At night the air drops back down as it cools, off the land and into the oncoming waves.

It's just unusually bright during those nights. Some people have trouble sleeping and that's it.
I mean, it's just a fuckin reflection of the sunlight from the Moon's surface.
>>
>>693525685
Gravitation pull from the moon a bit from the sun. Depending on where the spot is in relation to the moon affects the magnitude of the pull.

sun has nothing to do with it

My attempt without reading thread:

Everyone always says it has to do with the moon. Also tide comes in and goes out like once a day right? So the tide grows higher when the moon is closer cause gravity? And the degree it changes is based on how far away the moon is at that time of the year?

How did I do smartfags?
>>
>>693525685

There's also a small solar tidal variation.
>>
>>693528277
> It's just a fuckin reflection of the sunlight from the Moon's surface.

Very aware of that, thus my retention of a healthy skepticism.

Not Florida, but still south. And yes very superstitious place to be. My fiance, however, isn't a very superstitious person. But she still swears by this one.

The moon specifically deals with the tides that appear both low and high in not sure it has anything to do with the entire ocean itself I think its nore of the tectonic plates causing ripples wich produce waves and also dont forget the earths rotation wich also affects the ocean
>>
>>693528029
How can an infinitely thin disk have gravity, fag?
>>
>>693525685
Moon pulls on Earth water strongly, one bulge where the moon pulls strongest an an other one where it's pull is weakest. Earth spins under the bulges. Sun and other cosmic bodies does the same thing to a much lesser degree.
>>
>>693527065
That's retarded. The moon doesn't become any bigger/smaller or whatever.
>>
>>693525685

Center of gravity of joined earth-moon system does not lie in the rotation axis of the earth, but is a few 100km displaced from the earth center. That results in tides through earth's rotation.
>>
>>693530981
10/10 good bait
>>
>>693525685
Moon and gravity fuck
>>
>>693531091
So it's the water sloshing around rather than being tugged by the moon?
>>
You fucking retard.

It's obvious tides are caused by the combined mass of all the fish swimming towards the light of the sun. This pushes the water one way in the morning and another at night.

(Obviously fish includes whales, turtles etc even though they are mammals)
>>
>>693531754
Yep, that's it.
>>
