Well I moved from further south to further north and where I started was too brutal to patients for me to work and current location is either about right to woefully under prepared depending on how violent, healthy, and cunning the patient is. Been in 3 times through out my teen years for mental health reasons. It's boring as shit but met really down to earth people that I could chill with. The crazy ones I didn't bother talking to. There was a mini riot one time which i dont want to go into details with.

Open psych ward is pretty relaxed. I'd rather be home, but people very quite nice. A few people very slightly odd, most suffered from depressions, which can be hard to spot. If it weren't for the shared rooms you couldn't really personalize and the general clinic hospital atmosphere, it might even have been a lovely stay.

Closed psych ward is another story entirely. The surroundings are mostly the same. Single rooms and bars on the windows tho. No belts allowed for anyone. Socializing is a bit harder and the screams at night were not fun (you mostly notice them here). The atmosphere is an entirely different one.

Just got out of one of these places it's no different than jail.
The smell of these places I will never forget and the constant eyes watching you from all over. Stupid fuckn irritating

Schizophrenia is a stone bitch to treat however and often heavy meds barely keep them at a safe baseline of behavior and thinking (note safe not functional or productive) There is a reason we still have institutions and a related increase in homeless and prison population every time we close one. Some people are not able to manage themselves and we do not allow natural selection (social darwinism) to cull the herd. So while I will freely acknowledge a lot of psychiatric meds are harmful good luck managing the population that is maintained on them without them
