Legislation and enforcement no any what needs to change culture is. Young girls should he taught to become doctors and encouraged to pursue the arts and sciences. I remember getting into a big debate over this with my mother in law she took me shopping for her grandkids and bought the boys cool science kits and exploration toys. The "gender gap" is a result of poor statistics. It's not comparing equal work (equal hours, equal experience).

Read a bit by Claudia Goldin (Harvard economist specializing in gender economics). Basically it comes down to women being more likely to play supporting roles in life. And it's not because of a sexist society, it's because we're a sexually dimorphic species and women are the natural biological caregivers. They give birth, they are more responsible, and they are more often better at caring for another human being.

Anyway, being that they are caring for others (mostly the children that grew inside their belly) they're more likely to take long periods off from work, go part-time, or take rolls that are lower paying but allow for more flexibility.

Anyone implying it's a result of sexism is either a buffoon or an asshole pandering to zealots, and is in the end underestimating women's intelligence and ability to find the facts.

I really liked Last Week Tonight for its investigative journalism which highlighted rarely discussed but very important issues. His show was essentially a superior version of the Daily Show. Unfortunately, the show is at its worst when it deals with partisan, popular issues.
