What martial art would you choose to learn and why? Thinking of joining one.
>>
Ninjitsu.

Because. Ninja.
>>
>>692787540
Just learn to box instead.

Martial arts are for pussies.
Check it out - boxers always kick the shit out of MAs.

You might as well study yoga.
>>
>>692787540
Krav Manga or MMA. I did goshin jitsu for 6 years as a kid and i realise now later that it was a waste of time for the - most - part.
>>
krav maga
>>
>>692787855
I'm skinny as of now and don't want every one of my bones broken. Say I worked out and gained mass would I be shitted on every day still? If you had to choose one, MMA or Krav Maga, which would it be.
>>
>>692787540
I used to do taekwondo and strongly recomend it if you can find a place that teaches the traditional way not the sporty karate bullshit. I liked it because it requires a lot of fittness, has a vast amount of techniques that can be used differently for different functions (blocks can become strikes n shit) and most importantly because of the level of lethality, once you grade to black belt they will teach you very strong techniques that you are not allowed to practice in sparring because you'll cause perminant damage. I found this very useful as i grew up in a rough town where fighting was custom in disagreements and i'm joining the army so yeah
Thats what and why.
>>
Jkd
>>
>>692788162
Depends what you think your up against. If your enemy is 3-10 niggers trying to pwn you in the street then i'd go for MMA probably. If its mostly one-on-one scenarios then krav manga.

Krav Maga is probably the best as for techniqes but MMA will build your mass better i'd guess.
>>
>>692787540
Muay thai, all the effective techniques/strikes thrown into 1 package. Other than that, taekwondo american kickboxing or standard boxing is my recommendation
>>
Learn to box, then get into MMA.
>>
>>692787540
I've done karate for nearly 10 years now, and I've fought a lot of different guys from different styles. It honestly doesn't matter what martial art you do, all that matters is how much work you put into it.

Also if you're gonna choose, do Wing Chun, it's the martial art that flows the best
>>
>>692787855
MMA doesnt work in the real world. There is a referee and rules in a cage but two average guys could easily mug an mma fighter as they do not do weapons training and will kick kicked to shit if they fall over (which they do a lot)
Krav magar would be though>>692788793
>>
>>692787540
What do you want? More fitness or fighting skill?
A sport or a how to not get mugged lisence?
>>
>>692788843
Sure, trust a jew to teach me how to fight
>>
>>692788793
this. I've been in martial arts since age 6 and Wing Chun is one that I'm just getting into at the age of 28. Sadly I didn't realize how amazing it was until now. But as long as you push yourself it really doesn't matter what martial arts you choose.
>>
>>692789054
Doesnt change the fact that MMA doesnt work in the real world
>>
>>692788843
Obviously has no clue of real martial arts...

BJJ

It's the only one proven to work.

I recommend Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to you, OP.

It chanded my life, made me more confident, more aware of my body, made me really stronger and healthier.

BJJ destroys your ego and it's a great douchebag filter, so most people you'll meet are nice and helpfull.

Also after few years of figting you won't be dumber and dumber because no one hits you on the head.

Pros:
- low damage/injury risk
- you're putting in literally every musce into it
- cool and helpfull people attending
- you're overall conditioning will go up like crazy
- will do wonders for your mindset

Cons:
- useless against 3 or more opponents
- you will need to buy GI
- every inch of body will hurt in first 3 months
- if you're big ego guy you will be put in your place very often
>>
>>692789145
Dude i got two black belts in taekwondo and was always in fights at school, i was regarded as one of the toughest black belts and was often told to instruct students although i wasnt the highest grade there, i know what i'm talking about. Let me guess you did sumo wrestling in primary school?

i'm no expert on the subject, but from what i've seen wing chun is useful to people that already know how to fight. trying to use only wing chun will more than likely get you wrecked by anyone with any other fighting style.

sauce: a few fights i've seen where some wing chun badass gets his shit pushed in without much effort. i'm sure if you dig around on YT you'll find them
>>
>>692789331
Do something asian, i always suggest taekwondo because that's my field but aikido can be very useful if ou fight a good training centre i always advise against karate because its for kids and kungfu is just chinese boxing but yeah find a good place in your area (and always go to the toilet before training)
>>
>>692789776
That's the same problem, inexperienced people or people who don't give it their all tarnish the reputation of the martial art as a whole. It's fucking logic, if you can't fight, don't fight.

Yeah and I love it since I am jolly, nice guy.

I was doing Muay Thai for 2 years, gym was full of pricks who are there with their faces saying "I'm gonna kill you all faggots,, - even if they can't do anything.

On BJJ I went helpfull and nice people, who with a blink of an eye can snap into beasts with all their BJJ knowledge.

Also, I lost 14kgs in 1 year just by training BJJ.

Not trying to be a faggot, but if you don't have the spirit to fight then it makes no difference what style you learn. Most people you see in those "XYZ MASTER KTFO" videos are going into a fight thinking they are the best fighter around and the results are predictable. If you're unprepared for a curveball you'll get struck out. Most martial artists that I know move from one art to another over the years and this helps them to become well rounded fighters. I just feel like Wing Chun would be a good base to start from as opposed to other forms.
>>
>>692790248
BJJ doesnt work when you are in a self defence situation, never has. Its too slow, predictable to the trained eye (people trained in literally anything) rules of the sport say you cant punch or kick the head which is what works in the real world. From my experience as soon as someone feels the sting of a cut and sees there own blood they usually give up the attack as the feel they have lost control. Control of course is always no more than an illusion and real martial arts suchas krav maga, aikido and taekwondo teach you this.

Amen to that, I never practiced karate but you're right man.

I'm training BJJ myself, I once rolled with karate guy, he was fierce even on the ground, also he knew a few chokes with GI.

Also, them kicks right in the jaw.

I imagine if 2-3 nignogs will jump you on the street and you greet the nearest one with kick in the jaw and put him to sleep, all the others will run, or pull out a knife - then you should run.

Weapons are shit, I would always get the fuck away from a fight when someone got a gun/knife. Only if I am in the corner or they are about to hurt my friend I would jump in, other way it's always smarter to just run.
>>
I'd consider muay thai, boxing, judo, or san da if I really wanted to know how to fight.

I'd probably do xingyiquan or kendo for something I found interesting.

Kyokushin is both good for fighting and interesting, though, so if I get the opportunity I should probably do that.

>>
>>692790995
you literally have no idea what you're talking about. Kyokushin is a style of karate, and it's one of the most effective striking martial arts in the world. In Japanese MMA, a lot of people have kyokushin as their main striking style instead of muay thai.
>>
>>692790995
Not quite, everyone in that movie was pretty bad at karate. I'll admit that Kung Fu is better, but otherwise all martial arts are really the same. Technique doesn't actually matter, all you need is reflexes, the knowledge of the best places to hit and some practice

and to affirm what the BJJ guys are saying, their art is solid. Ground game like to other, and if you can take a street fight to the ground and maintain control you're (usually) golden.

Krav is an Israeli martial arts with the goal of killing an enemy combatant, or at least maiming them to the point where they can't do anything else to harm you. Brutal stuff.

I've got both BJJ and Krav (albiet only a year of "crash courses" from an instructor friend of mine) and I can only say that they add to my playbook in a very beneficial way. More styles = a greater ability to respond to a variety of situations

"kung fu" is just a catch all term for any Chinese martial art. Some styles, like san da, are indeed efficient. Some, like choy lee fut, are effective if trained in properly, but are sub par compared to martial arts with more active training. Some, like performance wushu, are actually completely useless. Some, like tai chi, may have been used for self defense at some point in history, but are now just done for recreational exercise.

You're both literally retarded. Grapplers destroy strikers. Boxers aren't trained to stop take downs, and once they're on the ground, they're helpless against anyone who knows judo, BJJ, or Greco-Roman wrestling. Boxing is one of the best striking martial arts, but you're literally retarded if you think it just destroys everything.
Also, while boxers are infinitely better punchers than muay thai fighters, muay thai fighters have the obvious upper hand because they use elbows, knees, and kicks as well
>>
>>692791568
Isn't the story behind tai chi that it was invented so the warlords wouldn't notice that they were doing martial arts training? I'm also pretty sure that tai chi is meant to be done as well as kung fu, not by itself
>>
ITF Taekwondo. Not WTF Taekwondo.

You will learn how to fight. Heaps of sparring.

That's if you want to go the traditional martial arts route. Other than that I would suggest BJJ and do both gi and no gi.

If you want to learn to simply fight and defend yourself, go with boxing/muay thai.

>>
>>692791966
I've never heard that but it seems suspect. You could be right though, who knows. Some styles of tai chi are more forceful and violent than others - Chen style Tai Chi has lots of obvious strikes, while Yang style Tai Chi is the slow moving one most people are used to seeing. When you actually see the applications of tai chi you can see it is basically a grappling style, and if you do sticking hands with a good tai chi practitioner it's disorienting how much they can dominate. Nowadays tai chi is certainly used to compliment other martial arts, but historically it seems to have been a stand alone martial art. It's interesting to compare it to other "internal" Chinese martial arts, like Baguazhang, which has the same slow, meditative practice, but strongly resembles both judo and aikido.

Still, at this point the exercise component is so strongly emphasized, that I don't think any modern day tai chi practitioners would even consider trying to use it against, say, an MMA fighter.

lol as soon as you enter the army you're going to learn what you just said is complete bullshit.

You do know that a number of martial arts were literally developed for military use, right? Krav Maga was developed by the Israeli military. ITF Tae Kwon Do was used by the South Korean military until its founder had a falling out with the South Korean government. American troops get training in MMA or BJJ. I'd be really surprised if Thai soldiers didn't train in muay thai.

i second aikido, i've been studying it off and on for years now, (3rd kyu) and its practical if your dojo does randori and works on more atemi (jabs) than just the three stupid strikes. in other words, just like everyone else on here that has done it, your dojo and instructor with have way more impact than the style.

A MMA practicer has 2 option :

Being a stricker, meaning he's more effective in boxing, kick boxing, or being a grappler, meaning he will try to go to the ground.

The "grappling and rolling" is only 50% of MMA training.

While you're busy playing with you pyjamas with scrypted movement, I'm busy sparring with real hit and strike, and yes, sometimes with grappling and rolling on the mat in a dry hump session.

But, in real life, my punch would be more effective than you dancing moove.

What's the best martial art for drowning people? My friends and I wrestle in the water and spend a lot of time in the lake. I love holding people down underwater until they violently thrash. yes, the demonstrations suck. in fact all the top end stuff is strictly for gibbering it up with other old guys. but if you learn ikkyo, nikkyo and sankkyo you have yourself a great time turning the tables on an attacker. but it takes time, most schools take forever about rank and some places promote your rank without promoting your belt so you stay a white belt even after years and promotion. it can be disconcerting to novice martial artists.

it depends on what you want to do and what you think a fight is.

if you are working security and need to deal with drunks or rowdy hotel guests without blasting them thru the floor, then there is none better. i used it effectively for years, was only interviewed by the cops once and never wound up in court.

it you want to fight in the ufc, go study karate and judo.

Can confirm as a past bouncer, I would have much rather had the knowledge to throw people out without taking a fight to a ground level.

Also, for those who want to do any kind of security or bouncing, you will quickly learn that women are the absolute fucking worst drunks to break up in a fight. Men have a one track mind and usually don't turn on you. Women don't give a fuck what's around them or who they hurt when they're mad at someone.

Fucking spoiled college kids and their shitty tolerance levels. Why can't everyone just come in, sip on some whiskey and talk about how their life didn't go as planned?

fighting is fighting, aikido is fighting without hurting, i.e. how to lose.

judo, aikido and a lot of jujutsu is derived from the same selections of old school japanese stuff, Ueshiba, Kano etc took what the wanted and made them suitable for the purpose they intended.

The key difference between Ueshiba and the others is that he incorporated his own personal religious beliefs into his form, which drastically reduced the effectiveness of the techniques in any practical sense.

It's why shodokan aikido exists, and it's why their practitioners have to gimp their contests to prevent them from using Judo, an actual effective form.

If you're truly honest with yourself you'll be able to admit you've never seen the techniques used in a real world situation.
>>
>>692802009
thanks, I've always wanted to pick up karate, just never had the chance.

so is it all Japanese arts that are this slow to teach and learn?

i only have experience in aikido and judo. judo was randori every session but it was faster than aikido in so many ways.
>>
Judo if you plan on learning something that legitimately helps you out in combat without causing any legal issues.

Boxing or muay thai if you want to fuck people up without fear of the law. Take this advice from someone that's practiced judo, karate and boxing for a good couple of years each. Most of the stuff posted in this thread is for clowns or people who plan on getting shot in the parking lot, with the exception of krav maga, that gets your ass whooped instead.
>>
>>692802531

They're slow because the orignal forms they're based on were dangerous to practise, which is why they have kata to begin with.

You learn basics and focus on kata and over time you refine your technique with light sparring.

Boxing and muay thai are demonstrably effective because they had to be. There is no room for bullshit in combat sports. If you have no interest in sports, you can still learn without getting battered around in sparring.

the law can be odd, but as a general rule of thumb, if someone attacks you, or you think they're going to, you can use reasonable force. Which translates as you can drop someone, but you can't put them in hospital.
>>
>>692802531
aikido is really slow, i have tried out a lot of martial arts, but the ones i trained the most are muay thai and Karate. The most fun i have had was training with bō, and doing muay.but if you are interested in it you should absolutely try out Karate, i practiced it for 7 years. And if you start with Karate, dont be afraid to go to competitions even if you have a very low belt, you learn a lot and have lots of fun. You will also gain insane overall body strength from Karate, i have never trained weight lifting or any of that sort, and i still bench more than the people who go to the gym everyday thanks the martial arts lol.
>>
>>692802675
I think that judo is more of a second art, you do that after an initial art is covered but judo is shit on its own and wont work
>>
>>692803377

judo is effective, but it depends on the traininig. Like all asian martial arts it depends on where you go and what type you're doing.

One Jap Jujitsu place might have some grappling but focus on striking, another might focus entirely on grappling from standing.

Others are more competitive sports focused, which others are more about milking money out of students and try to keeping them going for years without learning much.
>>
>>692802428
ok so you don't know fighting, thanks for your opinion.

allow me to enlighten the rest of the folks

fighting comes in three flavors, sport, art and combat which has two subsections, self defense and lethal hand to hand. you can use the same skill set but you better know what you are doing and why you are doing it. fighting is not fighting, you throw someone on cement because he insulted your mom and your ass is going to jail. likewise you throw a kick to someones head, boom, right in jail.

i have used ikkyo and sankyo very effectively for a long time. me, not a video, not a movie. me

it doesn't matter what o sensei said or did, it doesn't matter the rules, if someone grabs my collar, i got their thumb. and thats all you need.

Fighting comes in two flavours, fighting and bullshit.

If you want to wear a skirt and do cartwheels when sensi looks at you, you go right ahead. If you want to learn to actually fight, regardless of reason, do anything other than aikido.

hell, even ninjitsu can have effective techniques (because they stole them from karate and judo)

>>
>>692804754

not that guy, but I know a bit about krav.

They get a bit of a rep because people, including the guys to go to it, are told it's the isreali special forces stuff. It's not, it's a civilian grade self defense class.

In a one hour class, half your time will be cardio, the other half techniques. It won't be effective in a one on one fight with a skilled dude, because that isn't what it's for.

Its for getting you out of shitty situations. So lets of mental preparation, geared to helping you keep your wits about you instead of flapping and panicking when the adrenaline kicks in.

what to do when/approched by

>knife weilding mugger
>gun weilding mugger
>group of thugs
>being choked
>attacked from behind
>etc

They work as well as anything can, and you're always told the first thing to do is run, if you can't, then try something.

My favourite thing was when they get you to lie on the ground while the class circles you and kicks the shit out of you and you have to fight your way out of it.

You have to ask yourself if you want to invest in a striking martial art or a grappling martial art. Karate and Taekwondo schools are the most common eastern striking martial art schools to find but they are pretty much geared towards children. Proper striking doesn't take that long to learn anyways, so I'd recommend taking a few boxing/ karate/ taekwondo classes to learn proper striking form. After that I'd honestly invest in a soft style that involves joint manupliation. Aikido, kung fur, hapkido all are hard to find, but are very potent(which is why they are banned from the maa) if that doesn't appeal to you try krav maga or muay thai, they are very good striking hards that can save you in a pinch.

yeah, joe rogan talking about sports again. fun, but he should have talked to a bouncer or a cop about the effectiveness of their defensive tactics which are in large part based on aikido.

irl, there are beer bottles, chairs, guys with "secret knives", bouncers, cops, duplicitous girlfriends, you get the picture.

i know that ikkyo and sankyo are effective because i have used them as a doorman. and i am not a huge guy either. its not terribly hard to adapt an overhead strike defense to one against a beer bottle. or a side of the neck strike to a drunken, badly aimed version of a straight right.

Krav Maga or Ninjitsu

Both are perfect choices for self-defense, and Ninjitsu's ninja stuff is cool if you're into that kind of thing

If your not into the whole philosophical aspect, aren't trying to level up your self into a better person, just want to do it for self defense or want to be capable of kicking someones ass just go for something that has no spritual roots. Most asian martial arts have zen/chan budhistic roots and being able to fight isn't the most important reason these martial arts exist. I could give a more detailed explanation, but nahh. Short: they are more an active way to spiritual and physical awareness. I did Shorin-ryu Karate for a decade and probably won't be able to win a street fight with it. But it made me become a more sincere, hard working and self confident person. If you're looking some way to just win a fight try some combat systems, which were made for practical reasons like krav maga, Philipine MA (e.g. escrima), and combat systems used for sports like boxing.
