Yes, I had a 2005 elantra go to 189k miles before I sold it. Didn't have any problems, but I wanted a new car. Traded it in and got a 2011 hyundai tucson 2.4. Then I got a 2010 gencoupe 2.0t when I could afford it. I sold my gen and got another econobox after I felt my car payments were too high. Test drove a new FRS TRD around the time I got my gencoupe. The FRS wasn't what I wanted. Too small, not enough power, too many people were buying them, and for a used one in my price range it wasn't worth it.

If I was going to get another project car, I might consider it as to see what's so great about them, but I need something I can slap a few bolt on's, get a tune and be decently quick on a budger while retaining my warranty. I've driven a base VT and it was great. Handling was direct, suspension was a bit stiff for a commuter car, and the power dropped off above 6k. Interior quality is pretty good as well. I've also driven a Focus ST, MS3, and a WRX. Not a big fan of any of them. The WRX is no STi, and that's the only one I want.

Rotaries are simple to work on and the apex seals don't go as often as the internet would like you to believe, the reason there are so many blown rotaries is that retard kids these days don't change the oil every 3000km, a rotary is like a two stroke dirt bike motor in that they need to burn oil in order to work properly.
Get an rx8 OP, they handle amazingly and if you aren't a moron when it comes to maintaining it you won't have anything to worry about. And worst comes to worst and you have to rebuild it, it's super easy, just not as common as a piston engine so most people don't understand them.
