I know I'm just one person with one good experience, but I got a shepherd-ish mutt from the shelter and I'll never do anything else. If you're not putting it to the specific tasks purebreds were bred for, why in the hell do you need a purebred?
If you're adamant, that's your prerogative. If you were on /g/, I'd ask "what's your use case" -- as in what do you want out of a dog?

I've read that about them, I considered them for getting into falconry tbh. I had a poodle mix as a kid so got a soft spot for them.

More for the benefit of knowing more of what traits I'll be getting. Most purebreds are going to be pretty close in temperment. I wouldn't pass up the right dog at a shelter though, don't get me wrong.

Poodles are wonderful. Never met a poodle I didn't love. I can't say I've had the privilege of meeting any bernos though. Aside from upkeep (getting the poodle groomed and picking up after the St Bernard's sliver) a dog is a dog is a dog. Just treat them right, socialize them, and train them to not tear the house apart and they'll be the perfect pet.

Funny. Most chihuahuas I've met are very friendly and most corgis are just bundles of energy. Just goes to show that breed isn't the sole determinant of temperament. My best friend's sister is a tweaker that hoards animals (cats primarily) and has a pitbull shar pei mix that's descended from various lines of fighting dogs, but is the sweetest little fatso you've ever met. So protective of every litter of kittens that shows up. She's even nicked me a couple times because she thought I was hurting them.

Yeah, she was getting old. Legs were giving out on her and she stopped eating. She died on a Saturday. I remember it well because I had to leave for marching band practice at a local stadium. When I came back, I noticed she wasn't in the front door, waiting for me. My mom came to me and told me that while I was gone, Heart tried getting up from her bed, but just couldn't do it. After a third try, she just went limp and stopped breathing. She took her body to the vet to have it disposed. Didn't want me coming home to see her in such a pathetic state. Fuck, now I'm crying. Miss her so much.

My Laika is getting old too. DXd with hip dysplasia (GET REPUTABLE BREEDERS YOU FGTS) very early in life and she's been living with it ever since. She'll be 12 at the end of this year, I don't think she'll see 13. :(

I think it spans from the fact that when he was actually a pup and not a 120 lb. baby that some little nig nogs tried to steal him and he bit them.
