I played through XII a lot and I really liked it. Even though i don't remember the names of any of the characters and i really no idea what my motivation was during the game or why i was fighting the enemies.

Plotwise it was boring, but the combat system was hella fun.

FF8 was the first ff game I played out of the series and I fell in love with it. Everyone else that I knew that played vidya were basically swooning over ff7 and called ff8 shit in comparison. Decided to give it a shot. I will say it wasn't the worst out of the series but it was magnificently overrated for such a blah story and mediocre character dimensions. I told this to my friends and they just scoffed and said that I must not be a true "gamer" if I didn't think it was God's gift to video games.

In Final Fantasy X the entire plot is focused on Spira itself, mostly it's past and trying to break the cycle it's in. Dream Zanarkand, Tidus and Jecht themselves, Yuna and her dad, Auron's whole plot, the only thing about Kimarhi or wtf ever: They all happened in the past.

You just walk to Zanarkand having the world tell you it's story, a story you have virtually no involvement in as a player.

I have people that say they love this game but can barely explain the plot to me, what actually HAPPENS during the game.

That and Spira was fucking stupid, the whole "death and despair" motif was awful even when I played it as a teenager. The plot takes serious thought to cobble together, which makes for bad storytelling.
