Well the whole Eldritch thing really became popular with the Cthulu mythos by HP Lovecraft. Its all about cosmic horrors from space/the sea/other dimensions that are entirely alien and unknowable.

And it usually is conjoined with body horror, or the mental and physical corruption of those that are affected by the monsters.
