I work for a landscaping company, and that's we we primarily do but the owner of the company will take on any sort of job. We build (small) houses sometimes, build decks and porches, put in and remove docks in people's ponds, installation work (putting in dishwashers, sinks, toilets, that sort of shit). Sometimes we even do nuisance control, like getting rid of beaver or muskrats out of ponds/creeks or setting up traps for mice/rats/squirrels/racoons.

I really like the side work, it usually pays better and isn't nearly as shitty as spreading top soil or laying stone and sod.

I really don't mind the job at all, the only real issue I have is its mostly just me, the boss and one other guy doing a job that would normally require at least a few more people. We always get shit done but we work much longer hours than we would if we had just a couple more guys. Sometimes we'll work anywhere between 12 and 16 hours a day, which is never fun considering I like to go out and do shit after work most days.

24 work for a well known broker dealer/investment bank on wall st. Doing a bunch of these new SPVs like Airbnb, Lyft, uber, snapchat, And Spotify atm. Making a killing especially with the Middle East oil money.

Before I got to wall st, I was amazed at how many poor folks there are. Once I got here, I'm amazed as to how much money is out there. Totally blows my mind.

The financials of these private companies are also cool to look at. We never really care about the financials just the product itself. My perspective on things changed once I got here.

Went to film school. Saw all my friends dreams getting crushed trying to get into production (which is super unstable. Permanent freelancer status SUCKS). I seemed to be the only person who realized that they spend as much if not more money marketing the movie as they do making it. And all the jobs related to marketing are stable.
Made the mature choice, got an internship, and BUSTED ASS for a year.

100% Mac. Either AVID or Final Cut Pro 7 (not FCPX).

Editing skill and social smarts were the majority of it. Knowing how to make my work visible and when it was important to realllllyyy put in the hours.

If you aren't skilled with social graces, there isn't a chance you'll get as far as fast as I did.

Clients are clients. They scream and panic and are irrational constantly. But they also control the money hose, and at the end of the day, you are there to help solve their problems.

Sample timeline btw. That should give you some idea of how this goes.

That sort of timeline normally takes a week or two to make.
All of those audio tracks are 'sound design'. The whooshes and rumbles and booms that define the 'trailer sensibility'.

If you can learn the rules of sound design, that will put you WAY ahead.

Every genre has its own palate. Action is more percussive and gun sounding. Sci fi is ethereal and airy. Horror is typically orchestral string based (screeches, plucks, etc...) but all use booms and ramps.

Is 27 too old to start learning how to become an editor? I went to college for biology but it has not worked out for me and my heart wasn't in it in the first place. I'm the youngest person I know in this industry doing the job of Full Time Editor. Almost all of my co workers are in their 30's-40's.

More and more people are wanting to be trailer editors, and it's been fascinating seeing the average age of our interns going up and up.
I don't think 27 is too old. But you need to be prepared to start over in a new career and be entitled to nothing. Lots of the older interns I see come and go aren't mentally prepared for those two things.

You don't need a top of the line PC to handle HD video editing. You're not doing 3D rendering or anything.
A final-gen 17" MacBook Pro is actually the laptop of choice for freelance editors.

It's a tough question because I know that College is where I learned almost all of my social skills. I went from being an awkward quiet high schooler to a confident 'fake it till you make it' extrovert.
Did college teach me the technical skills of editing? Absolutely not. But i learned a lot all the same.
>>
>>691184126

I don't. The videos I edited back then were for school assignments and just crappy home movies using windows movie maker or other no-name software. I don't have any skills. I don't even have a computer that could handle editing and I don't know what to edit. My depression after college killed my creativity sadly. I took an advertising class in high school on a whim and I remember having a blast when we made video ads.

Literally any Mac that isn't an Air or Mini (not enough ports to support accessories) will do.

aerial photography

i fly high speed (for a piston) complex airplanes and take pics for large companies marketing large properties

its probably the most challenging flying you can do aside from airshow aerobatics when I'm in situations like a few hundred feet over downtown chicago

none at all.

#1 drones cant go over 400' and you cant see dick at 400'. these companies want demographic info, you gotta be at least 1000' but for vertical/straight down sometimes we're 5-6-7k' above the ground.

#2 drones need to be driven there. have fun paying a crew (min two people by law) all day for one faggy shoot they make $150 on
2.b i can be anywhere in mid america and home again, we capture waaaay more area business than a wheels-based drone crew can.

#3 drones cant operate inside c/b airspace yet, so any cite near large cities (like... almost every job unless you land that phat cornfield gig) is off limits to drones.

when i joined the company i thought it was doomed and drones would take over everything. i've since learned theres not much to worry about

(plus we do drone work outselves lol so, if shit changes wildly, we're way more established with large companies and ready to do that work)

I mean if you just want freelance work cutting audio to video, Craigslist is a great resource.
You won't make a ton of money, but you'll get better at editing.

I've got a BS in Chemical Engineering (graduated very much in the middle of my class, but I'm not some weirdo robot so I can interface with clients and customers effectively)

Worked my way up through corporate sales over the past 3 years, high performer (I'm 26)...

For you? Since you have a degree in business you wouldn't cut it, but you could do well in Medical device sales or pharma sales, given that you are not a social retard and not ugly as fuck...

Working at a restaurant/Starting College this fall.
-I had a fiance and we had a great life together, but he passed away. Realizing I'll never have a love like that again I also make some much needed money by fucking a few wealthy men in exchange for money.
