It's been a while since I've seen it so correct me if I'm wrong, but there is one linear narrative that involves a reporter investigating Kane by talking to the people who knew him, which is interspliced with non-linear flashbacks of Kane's life right? So yeah, a step up from most films in terms of storytelling complexity, but I don't think it's prohibitive to the average audience.

As for a revolutionary use of formal techniques, I'm genuinely not sure how that would make it harder for people to understand it.
