anyobe here who has served in the military? how hard is it to make it through bct, specifically pt and shooting tests? is the yelling all the time as shitty as it seems?

I leave for Navy boot camp in October, my brother left today, from what i've heard, it's tough but manageable, as long as youre in good shape
>>
>>690831099
Army? Fuck that.
>>
>>690831099

USMC, shooting is fun. bct is, well, let's say they put you under stress (both physical and psychological) for 13 weeks.
>>
>>690831099
I've been in the army for about nine months now. It's really not a hard job. Training (Basic/AIT) were the most fun times of my life tbh.
Training seems to suck while you go through it, but you have really close friends with you, which more than makes up for it.
It's not challenging, the physical standards are extremely pussy. You also practice a lot before qualifying with your weapon, the only way to fail is if you fuck up really bad or just don't try at all.
>>
>>690831099
You will get better at PT during OSUT or basic reguardless of what you are doing, just do some pushups and what not on your own before. Shooting seemed to come naturally to me and also most the people there. Of course there are the people who just suck and shoot like 20 the whole fucking time. And the yelling....it was intimidating at first but you just kind of get used to it. Realize they are people and its all just a game. You will be fine anon. Real army is easy shit. Hurry up and wait
>>
Corporal in the USMC/normal fag

It's really not hard to pass any part of training, dude. They teach you everything and beat it into your brain before you test out on anything so it's kinda dummy proof. The constant yelling is more annoying than anything but you get used to it. And once you finish training and get to your unit life mellows out and it becomes a normal job more or less.
>>
It's a joke how easy it is. Follow instructions, keep your mouth shut, you pass. It's not designed or intended to eliminate anyone.
>>
>>690831099
really think about what branch you wanna go into man, when i was first interested in the military I wanted to be 19k, which is a tank operator, did some research and figured driving tanks wouldn't really get me that far later on, went with Navy and got IT, guarantied E4 after my class A school which is pretty sweet, just think about it man
>>
>>690831982
as of right now i can do 32 pushups and 57 sit ups. im also doing c25k every other day where i jog for 1.5 mins and walk for 2 in 20 minutes to get better at running. are my pushups and situps okay for entry (basically would i struggle)?

3 years Army. Shit is easy. The most difficult lesson you will learn in training is personal responsibility and teamwork. If you are not using the resources you are given to succeed they will figure you dont care that you are there. They wont let you fail as long as you show that it is important to you. unless you are just fucking bad at everything but nothing can fix that anyway
>>

>>
>>690831099
The Army is a joke buddy. The military, in general, has lost its status of being elite and worthy of joining. They have lowered their standards significantly. The Army is full of a bunch of lazy shits that need to be told what do for the rest of their life. Back in the 70's and 80's, the Army had a good reputation. The branch went to shit in the 90's and has trickled down the crapper ever since. If you can at least do a correct push up and run for 10 minutes, you will be fine. Army is a slobbish way out of working hard. My dad got out back in 2014, served 24 years. Said that it is a fat wast of time full of stupid bastards that want an easy pay check, not much of one either. If you want a challenge, at least part of one, join the Marines. It pains me to say that but the Army is a shithole. I wouldn't recommend the Armed Forces to anyone, but I can at least give a pointer if you are set in going that direction.
>>
>>690831099
Basic is pretty tedious.
PT is not fun.
Shooting is cake. You just need good eyes.

Shutup and do what you're told and you won't be yelled at all that much.

Are you gay? If not, then don't join the Navy. It's full of a bunch of homosexuals. If you are a faggot, plan on bringing some lube like the other anon said.
>>
>>690832997
What's your AFSC?
>>
>>690833691

>>
i want to be in tge military but i just trsted myself and i can do 31 consecutive pushups and 47 consecutive situps. how much better should i get before joining
>>
>>690833452
Leave the advice giving to people who have joined.
>>
>>690833851
how's your running?
>>
>>690833842
Then join the Marines or Army. They have fags as well, but definitely not half as much as the Navy. Air force is cancer, don't even consider it unless you are some manlet nerd.
>>
>>690831099
No idea about basic combat training, as I'm going to Marine boot camp, but the main thing to remember is that you're not the only one there, you're going to be put into a group. You'll be held responsible for the weakest link in your group so make fucking sure that isn't you, otherwise you'll get hell from not only your DS's but also your entire platoon.

I don't know about the Army, but you'll get beaten to shit if you're not holding your own. PT isn't really a focus in boot camp, as the mental rebuilding takes priority. The main objective is to make you a troop, not stronger. In boot camp, we also don't get to shoot until near the end of our 13 weeks.

>is the yelling all the time as shitty as it seems?
Yes, you have to be as loud as you can every time you speak, but you'll never be loud enough.
>>
>>690833677
Take the practice test at the recruiting station first. Then study up on the ASVAB. Find a rate that sounds good to you.Don't let the recruiter pressure you into some bullshit rate. If he does, tell him you're going to the army office.

I'm active duty navy, been in 5 years.
>>
bct is easy, you don't even have to think just do as your told everything you need and its a piece of cake. As long as you are not a shitbag, yelling hardly happens after BCT/AIT.
>>
>>690831099

11 year Navy vet, 6 combat zones, 1 boots on ground tour with attached to the Army in Iraq.

Basic is the hardest thing you have done until that point. They will raise your stress levels because you are currently soft. You require heat and pressure to be made harder.

Basic is not easy, but you will look back on it as if it was. Your threshold for what is hard or easy will be raised. You are joining a fighting force in the world's largest military. Shooting is easy, you get practice. I have passed Navy and Army combat skills training, Navy and Army close quarters combat schools, and am currently a Navy close quarters combat instructor (part time, I do many other things too)

Its not hard, just break the sucky bits down to 15 minute blocks, if you can just make it through 15 minutes count it as a success, if 15 is too long do five.

You only fail if you quit... Everything happens for a reason, it is designed so as long as you learn to never quit you will succeed.

Last but not least,
Hooah!
>>
>>690834104
Or what? 360 no scope just like how you practiced in basic? Kill yourself you grunt fuck.

>>690833413
shits real easy as long as you could do like 30 push ups and sit ups. I wasn't in great shape when I joined and it was pretty easy. I'm IS which is Intel. I would get into anything tech related.

Meet the minimum qualifications before you ship off, then exceed them. Go for as many as you can.

Why is this even a question?
>>
>>690833422

Jog, eat decent meals, and study the fuck out of the Asvab. Make sure you dont neglect the electrical and automotive sections.
>>
Why are people still falling for the military meme?
>>
>>690833851
Lookup APFT score chart. It's dependent on sex and age. Barely passing is 50 pts in all three categories. Don't go if you are only capable of the bare minimum
>>
>>690833677
Don't overthink it. The ASVAB is really easy if your reading comprehension is good and you can perform mathematics at at least a Calc1 level.

Reading and math are the most important parts, everything else just says which field you can qualify for.

Try going for distance then instead of time. Find a standard track: every lap is .25 of a mile. 5km is about 3miles.
>>
>>690831099

Army Basic isn't that bad. 66/68 people in my platoon graduated. Only about 40% of people in my AIT class graduated though. Most got recycled (started over) and a few got re-classed (got assigned a different job). Although it is mostly horrible, the Army is still worth it. Just do NOT be a CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Specialist). It is not as cool as it sounds on paper...
>>
Why are people still enlisting in the military? Seriously ... why? Go to college like a decent person.
>>
>>690832583
Long time Navy here, do it, pick a technical rate, weapons are badass. The best move I made was joining the Navy.

I have had the pleasure of serving with all the branches, here is a breakdown:

Army - Dumb as fuck, big, many of the bosses are also dumb, also 15 month deployments. Fuck that

Air Force: Basically an extension of the mail service, Has the most planes, something like 85% of the planes are supply chain. Advancement is retarded slow, you will be stationed your whole career on one base

Marines: Pussies, not the individuals, the organization. Current Marines please let me know if you disagree, the Marines in garrison fucking suck. You guys get tied up about hiding your wallet in your socks and ensuring your tattoos are not too badass for the normal, non-combat population. Wartime Marines are the shit, but you can't always be at war.

>>
>>690835313
I didn't realize that college is free and always results in a better job.
>>
>>690835326

Cont from ^

Navy - Fixed deployment schedule, there is no change to our schedule if we are at war or in garrison, we always think as if we are at war. There is enough demand in technical ratings that you advance stupid fast. E-7 in 10 years and I could have done it faster if I didn't fuck up my whole first 5 years. We fight from air conditioned self contained cities, I have slept out on the dirt and eaten MREs (Or worse, nothing) but that is rare. I get hot meals, flush toilets and showers whenever I want em on my floating weapon of war.

College can be affordable if you put in the work and do/did well in high school. I did, and I got accepted into every college I applied to and got really great academic scholarships. Working towards finishing my Master's degree and I am pretty happy with very very little debt. Nobody chewed my ass out and I haven't done a push-up since HS.

The military seems like a place where drop outs go - all the smart people went to college and if anything joined at a higher rank.

What this man said.

The only complaint I have is if your ship gets put on water hours. (I.E. the ship can't make potable water) so you can only shower at certain times like 2300-0200. That's why baby wipes come in handy.Being out at sea, time goes by super fast because you have a routine.
>>
>>690836014
And sweat the bullshit. If it wasn't for worrying about bullshit they wouldn't do anything in peacetime.

Back in the war I used to wish I was a Marine, I even talked to a recruiter about going 0211. Now that I see them in peacetime I am glad I didn't

>>690831099
BCT is incredibly easy. If you somehow manage to not make it through basic, you are a major shitbag.

If the thought of basic training being hard is something you are worried about, you would shit yourself in a fight, I would suggest the peace corps.
>>

>>
>>690836014
And eat paint chips and lick windows. Marines get even dumber if theyre not out in the field doing excerises.
>>
>>690836364
It's not bait. I've never seen the military as a compelling avenue (especially since there isn't really anything going on) ... maybe if your grades sucked or you didn't do so hot on the SAT/ACT then yeah okay but there is community college now, it's pretty cheap in comparison.

If you can do 50 push ups, 50 sit ups, and run 1.5 miles in 13 mins 30 secs, you're fine. Navy just recently changed the BCA standards to accompany all the fatties. So depending on your weight/height and age, you can be up to 23% body fat and still be ok

You can also swim, bike it or elliptical the prt.
>>
>>690836747

>>
>>690836341
Well, to answer the original question honestly:

I did okay in highschool (3.9, 1210 SAT [710 Math, 500 Verbal]) and got accepted to schools easily enough, but when I applied for grants and scholarships, I got nothing.

At that point, the GI Bill (yes, even the pre-9/11 GI Bill) looked like a reasonable option, and I figured that I could get some kind of skill, at least.

I asked around and nobody suggested that going into the military for the GI Bill was a bad idea--and without the internet being a thing (that shit didn't really take off until 95/96), I didn't really have any evidence that it was a poor decision.

So there... that's how I ended up enlisted in the AF. Looking back, it still seems like a fair decision.

Where I *really* fucked up was staying in past that first enlistment. I had saved up 10s of thousands by the end of my first 4, and should've split.
>>
>>690836672

"There is community college now"

Like its new.

Top 8% of population judged on ability to learn a new task and complete it. Intelligence is a very subjective term. Scored in genius range on IQ tests. Yeah, dropped out of high school because was mind numbingly easy to start going to college, didn't finish college because boring as hell.

Joined military, make more money and have WAY better benefits than my college graduate civilian friends.

My wife is a college grad with shitty medical, 2 weeks off a year, and no retirement plans from her company, She has a Bachelors in Accounting too, not some bullshit art degree.
>>
>>690836441
I'm not a flyer, but I think Fairchild is the only place with a SERE school, so of course they're stuck there.
>>
>>690837286
I have to bike the prt because of a minor ankle injury. Most commands give you a choice. But the sit ups and push ups are mandatory. Yes, you can choose to bike, swim, elliptical, or run it.

Comm had it shitty in Korea.. I was glad when our shop broke away from comm.

For all the exercises we have in Korea, you don't fucking need pre exercises to the goddamned exercise that tests your readiness.

>>690837135
But I didn't ... scholarships paid for a bulk of my bachelor's degree, working to pay what wasn't covered. I landed an internship where I'm getting credit towards my master's degree, it's very comfy life.

Again, how the fuck does it even matter??
>>
>>690838598
>how the fuck does it even matter?

Alright. I originally asked if height would be an issue, and instead of yes or no, I got your response.

It's basically going up to somebody selling a used lamp and asking if it works and they reply ''purple.''

It's vague.
>>
>>690835313
I did, and disliked it. Life in the civilian world felt stagnant and unfulfilling, regardless of what I did. I tried different courses to see if I could get a feel for something I enjoyed but nothing stuck. Then I tried PT'ing with the local recruiting station and loved it.

Going to school, working, and maybe getting just enough time to do something fun didn't make me happy. I realized that life after college would be pretty much the same, so I dropped it.
>>
>>690838992
Well, let me spell it out for you then:

I don't give a fuck about how tall you are if you get the job done. And why would I?

That's what I was trying to get at: I don't even understand how it's an issue. Who gives a shit?
>>
>>690839412
He'll get made fun of a lot, but yea, you're right.
>>
>>690839412
And I decided not to specifically respond to your question because it is a cliche question that gets a cliche response, like you stated.

I appreciate what you're trying to say though, I get that, I know that height isn't a problem if it doesn't effect your job.

I was looking more along the lines of height to weight ratios for the requirements of joining.
