I think that gun ownership is a part of our national identity. Obviously not for all americans, but for many. The right to own firearms is in one of our founding documents. Taking them away would seem to many people to be simply counter to our values as Americans.

Here's the real question: Why doesn't the government prove to us that stricter gun laws will actually improve anything.

Couple points that are on my mind:

One. It's already been proven that more strict gun laws do nothing. Look at Chicago and LA. Absolutely insane gun restrictions. And yet it's open gang warfare in the streets. The vast majority of the gun violence is committed using illegal, black market firearms. These people aren't walking into gun stores, picking out the Glock they think looks cool, filling out the paperwork, and patiently going through the waiting period. It's retarded to think that these laws actually do anything.

Two. Look at the war on drugs. In general, all drugs are either outright illegal, or at the very least heavily regulated. And yet we drug use is exploding. Many hundreds of people die every day because of "illegal" drugs. It may be against the law, but they are still readily available. We've been fighting the drug problem and making new laws for it for decades and decades now, and it hasn't even slowed it down.

Both of these points are proof that just throwing laws at the problem solves nothing. Just by saying something is illegal doesn't magically make it disappear.

The reason I want (not need) an AR-15 is simple: criminals don't care about laws. By definition they break laws. If they want a gun, they're going to get a gun. All the laws do is criminalize, penalize, and put in harms way law abiding citizens.
