"Pennsyltucky", Kentucky, West Virginia, Western Virginia, Western MD, Tennessee, and the Northern parts of Alabama fit far more into "Appalachia" than then do into "The South". I live in nc and for the most part like it. There are of course spots in nc that are awful but really for the most part it's a nice state.
