Having someone who cares about you first (and vice versa) is the most important part. This is usually called love but it really boils down to someone elses life being more important to you than your own. One reason why kids can lead to divorce is because parents sometimes realize they dont feel this way about their partner after they actually feel that way about their child. But if you do find someone that you both actually mutually feel this way you can make it work.

None of us are perfect or completely selfless so after step one you need to focus on communication and expressing concerns or needs in a non threatening or aggressive manner. If you need alone time explain to your partner that alone time is important to you and why you feel that way. If you two can have those types of conversations with each other you can get past most problems.

You have to be willing to be best friends. It sounds cliche but if you are willing to take interest in their interests and have them take interests in yours you can still be your own person just with companionship when you want. Sure spending a sunny day in a dusty antique shop may be her idea of fun but id rather be in my kayak. But we do her activity because yesterday she went the the aquarium with me stoned out of our minds. Remember you are in it for the long haul dont get needy and selfish take your time.

Theres more to it than that but thats the basics of how to try and make it work. It doesnt always work but id say it helps.
