The way I look at it. I actually like Kurt Cobain now. I think Kurt Cobain was very self aware. He knew his music sucked.

He knew it was basically just a poor attempt a punk music. He was too depressed to really do punk music so he kinda half assed more traditional song writing methods to fill in when he didn't feel it. Recording agents and masses loved it because it's more marketable than normal punk which is almost better the worse it is.

Basically he became to Punk what Kenny G is to Jazz. So they called it Grunge.

He definitely killed himself. Cortney Love is crazy but he was just too depressed over how shitty his music is and how he almost single handedly sold out so hard he destroyed the most extreme detour from the over produced mainstream music genres which recording companies had packaged and stiffled.

Too bad he was too much of an idiot to realize that by doing that he only further solidified his popularity with the mindless masses.

He would have been better off if he had just started off sold out instead of doing it over his career.

I'm going to say the Rolling Stones are the most overrated. Now, their early work was both great, and influential, but they've not done anything truly noteworthy since the early 70s. When was the last time you heard anyone say that they couldn't wait for the new Stone's album, or their next tour? Probably never in your lifetime. Plus, even their early work was an imitation of what was popular at the time. The Stones of any given era made music that was derivative of whatever was popular at the time. That their music was ever anything that could be considered groundbreaking, or fresh is purely a fluke.

What people fail to remember, if they ever realized it at all, is that grunge was a huge fucking breath of fresh air at the time. Before grunge hair metal dominated MTV, and the world of rock. While many of the hair metal musician were technically very competent, the music was a huge fucking joke, and hard to take seriously. Grunge may have been simpler and more raw, but it had themes that people, especially kids could relate to. When Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc. came along, hair metal silently faded into the very back row where it belonged. That's why grunge had the impact that it had. I don't think most people really believed that Kurt Cobain was a better musician than say Slash, it's just that his music had real fucking soul to it.

Maybe that's not the best comparison either, because GnR did manage to not be a total joke like Motley Crue or Ratt. Still they were pretty much the poster boys for everything that was shitty about hair metal, including the douchey attitude.
