23, Male, Smart with some things, not so much with others. Just like everyone else.

And I'm not just talking about subjects in which I am knowledgeable or clueless about, but just mental abilities. Some people are better learners but have poor memorization. Some people grasp new concepts quicker than others or are better at learning everything there is to know about a single specific subject.

>Upper 10%, at least

Why do I think I'm in the top 10% of the world's population intellectually? Not because I've achieved anything particularly noteworthy, not because of my grades, an IQ test, or what I scored on the SAT. Definitely not for the decisions I've made throughout my life.

I think I'm that smart because I've never struggled to understand anything. Get through dense reading, yes. Puzzle through shitty phrasing and bad mathematical examples, yes. Fail to completely memorize properties and terminologies? Yes.

Despite that I have consistently outperformed people who studied harder, were older than me, more driven, more interested in the subject, and had spent longer studying the object of our focus. I'm not naturally good at everything, and there are some brainteasers or "simple" game puzzles that confused the fuck out of me, but with the exception of specialists or savants I can put in 20% of the effort and get 130% of the average person's results.

I think I'm that smart because everything has come easy to me--yes, even dating and socializing, though I hate doing both of those things--for as long as I've been alive. I read encyclopedias and scholarly articles in the public library by my house when I was twelve.

In spite of all of that, I'm mostly content to do nothing. So smart, yeah. Driven, successful, or somehow living meaningfully? Not so much.

Twenty-three, male, and I have no idea. Intelligence manifests itself in various ways. People often refer to me as smart because of well I can articulate internal phenomena, even though they're a tad biased by the fact many people falsely presume decent-looking people to be more intelligent than they really are.
I honestly don't know how I'd measure intelligence. If it's social awareness then that's a little tricky, because I tend to be more relaxed in my judgements of other people, while they tend to be extremely insecure and petty, so I occasionally feel retarded since my perceptions don't match up to the group consensus.
I can grasp complex information rather quickly, though, even if it's presented in an obtuse fashion, but it would have to be stimulating to me. Subjects like mathematics are extremely dry so do nothing but frustrate me.
Natural sciences like biology or physics, on the other hand, are much more exhilarating.

Smart is a stupid term that gets thrown around a lot by the masses.

Intelligence, has more scientific routs when it comes to meaning.

>ability to learn
>ability to use logical reasoning
These things are part of intelligence, while knowledge is not part of intelligence.

There are different aspects of intelligence, similarly to how there are different muscles I the human body.
Some people have stronger muscles relative to their others, similarly to how some people are stronger at other mental abilities than others.

You sound like you're lacking basic education in psychology, which makes your post look like an uneducated and delusional mess.

I took AP psychology in high school, and another psychology course while getting my associates before I dropped out. I've also casually spoken to some psychiatrists at some point, and gained some knowledge about the application of psychology through that. I also used to watch a bunch of psychology documentaries, and read diagnostic criteria and what not, because I genuinely enjoyed studying psychology.

Claiming education in anything, including formal education, frankly, doesn't mean jack shit.
It's just that people, especially people of average intelligence, as I've personally perceived and studied through personal social interaction, are subjected to misinterpretation of data, and therefore become delusional.
tl;dr: A lot of normal people self study on the internet, and then spout a bunch of delusional bullshit because they didn't understand what they read.
Also, there's a lot of outdated information still available on the internet; psychology is a relatively young science, but it's still growing.

I don't browse and ore post on /pol/ but I like their sticky.

>Tell me why whenever I hear "formal education in psychology" I attribute a layer of authenticity to the statement where their words carry weight, but if I were in the same situation, which I regularly am, I kinda perceive the title to be bunk.

So, when you hear someone say that they have a formal education in psychology, you find that the person is a credible source?
But if you were to be telling someone that you have a formal education in psychology, the person would not perceive you to be more credible despite how you said you have a formal education in psychology?
Because you said "If I were in the same situation" even though you were in the first situation.

Maybe you're trying to say that when you think to yourself "formal education in psychology," you think that a person with said education is credible, while when you hear people claim that they're formally educated in something, like psychology, you don't ad more credibility because of the statement.
If it's this one, then my answer to you is:
Maybe it's because psychology is the scientific study of, well, psychology, and you attribute the scientific method to be a valid means of finding truth, and therefore, anyone who studies the body of knowledge that is psychology, which was obtained through science, would have truthful knowledge. Furthermore, if said persons were educated formally in psychology, the persons would've obtained said knowledge in a way that would not be misinterpreted, and therefore lead to delusion, or untruthfulness in words.

>Honestly the feeling terrifies me, like you go to a doctor as an average joe believing they have all the answers, but then you become one and realize you're not even close.

I was stopped by the police, and they asked me to blow in some kind of apparatus. It showed 146 and 143, so my smartness must be in the range of IQ 144, I guess.

33, male, top 1%, demonstrated by statistics for the SAT and ASVAB. Don't know the sub-percentile of the 1%, but I got a 163 on the LSAT without studying, so probably decent.

>i think im more 'intelligent' than 99% of the population. no iq bullshit i just think of things on MUCH bigger scale

Lol.

20 male blessed with equal parts extremely high IQ and apathy. got 4's and 5's on all AP tests, my SAT scores could get me into most universities and when I'm bored I research history, cience, learn languages, etc.

Annnnd I'm going to jail for possession of LSD tomorrow, woo.

Well, I gave a general range for my age. It isn't wrong.

I'm half as intelligent as I was ten years ago. Use your brain, kids. It really does rot away if you don't. Especially if you happen to like illicit substances.

have you ever been really high and you just stop talking mid sentence because you think something else and it just chains and it doesnt make any sense but you're just sober enough that it pisses you off? thats being sober for me, often times.

i also have like classically disorganized thoughts but i think thats like a personality thing not a brain thing

like dumb shit, probably not even weird. obsessing over what i said to someone/what they said to me, then thinking of plans or financial situations. just stuff people think about i think? i do have like 'paranoia'. i wont talk about some things in front of phones: on or off. sometimes i get half way through a sentence and i just stop and people wait for a while. eventually they repeat the last word. being online is nice because i can re read what i wrote so i know that theres more needs to be there.

and i think out of order a lot, i wrote this post all over the place. im a really annoying story teller because ill just sidetrack forever.

it's kind of weird to talk about what 'weird' shit you do because to me everything i do is normal (and i think maybe it is?)

I would put myself at the top of natural intelligence, bottom of work ethic. I always had a knack for maths, finished Calc 3 sophomore year of highschool then started taking math classes at Northwestern.
IQ don't mean shit but I'm sure I have a solid score, I got accepted into Mensa when I was very young but my father said it was a bunch of useless geeking out over test scores so I never went to a meetup.

I've got enough intelligence to pick up a new task or class easily and enough knowledge to play varsity scholastic bowl.

peace.

2/2

>Like how do you cope with the knowledge that people actually believe what you say to be true when you're prone to more complex forms of doubt?
Some people find that exposure therapy helps with coping with things, and things include coping with what you posted.
If you feel negative emotions when exposed to a stimuli, but then become numb to it through exposure therapy, you no longer feel the negative emotions.

>people believe what you say to be true
>when you're prone to more complex forms of doubt

So, you're feeling negative emotions because of this?

You're feeling negative emotions because people believe things to be true even though they could very well be wrong, and they communicate their opinions, spreading misinformation, which then in turn causes more of a spread of misinformation, which leads to people being effected by misinformation, and the people find the effect to be bad because it causes them negative emotions, and they feel these negative emotions for whatever reason, and that makes you feel negative emotions because of empathy and or sympathy? You feel negative emotions because of the previously stated because the previously stated in turn leads to a lower quality of life for all, and therefore you?
If it's one of those, maybe thinking about how because it would take a lot of work to even try to get everybody in the world to hold higher standards for truth and doubt more complexly, and that work would cause stress and negative emotions, it's illogical to feel negative emotions about it, and then accept that.
For some reason, this could cause people to be able to cope with negative emotions because it allows them to not feel the negative emotions as strongly upon understanding said
Maybe you react with sadness and or anger when you think about said process.

17, M, my IQ is 141 but I'm clearly much smarter and more mature than most college kids. My reading level is at the top of the metric. I used to read dictionaries and encyclopedias for fun in elementary school, it was pretty boring in school otherwise. I pulled a computer out of the trash and began programming by 6th grade which was kind of late but I grew up poor. I had wrote programs on paper for fun before then after pulling some old programming books from the library trash.

I'm mostly bored of the internet and computers at this point though. So I'm starting to get into geopolitics and I'm learning Cantonese, Spanish and Russian and I've joined a local Arboretum for shits 'n giggles. XD

I am pretty average.

I just seem smart to others because I read a lot and listen to NPR, and use those as talking points in conversations when something relevant comes up.

I used to know some faggot that would always argue with me based off of what he heard on NPR. He actually thought he was qualified to engage in a conversation on topics that I studied for months, or years, based on him hearing about something for half an hour. I still get angry when I think about that nigger being all smug trying to school me on shit I learned years before he heard about them on NPR.

That sounds annoying.

That's not what I do. I don't like to argue outside of my realm of immediate knowledge (mostly just CS). As I said, I'm average, but I also know my limits so I would never put myself in that position.

I just bring things up I hear to make the conversation more interesting. For example, I heard a story the other day on NPR how recipes aren't copyrightable. I mentioned it when we were talking about copyrights and trademarks.

Not saying you would do that. Was just reminded of that guy always being annoying by striking up conversations about random subjects, only to tell me I am absolutely wrong on everything because the guys at NPR said something. He would say "I am sure you know more than the guys at NPR" and I would say "I learned enough to come up with my own ideas instead of blindly following what others say." Whatever the case, I don't talk to that guy any more. Put up with this shit for too many years.

Because our k-12 is garbage, but our higher education is some of the best in the world. Thus they slide on in, get some of the best education in the world, and make that money. We are approaching an age were those countries will develop higher education that competes with our own, so we might be fucked in the near future if we don't have the smart people of the world coming to us.

The Other Post
by Anonymous Anerson
(you can call me Anon)

>Like how do you cope with the knowledge that people actually believe what you say to be true when you're prone to more complex forms of doubt?
Maybe when you think about people's forms of doubt relative to yours, you feel negative emotions, emotions like anger, disgust, sadness, and or contempt.
To cope with feeling bad about feeling those emotions, some people are told to identify when they do those things, and then practice returning to a non-emotional and or positively emotional state of mind.
So, they don't feel the emotions for as long and or strongly.
Also, when doing the previously stated, when thinking about how they feel bad because of thinking about the thing, which in the scenario is people's logic, they think about how they've utilized the technique of identification, then feel neutral and or positive emotions because of that.
The cause of then feeling the neutral and or positive emotions could be caused by various things.

Personally, I think I'm a failure of life.
I was an emotional wreck just a few days ago, and I've been stressed out and deprived of sleep.
I have to do work that isn't intellectually challenging because they pertain to me achieving goals I have for my life and future.
I haven't put as much effort into something, anything, in a long time, as I've put into replying to your post.
It feels nice to scratch the surface of thinking again, even if it's just a little.
Thanks.

It's late, I was doing something before I impulsively went on 4chan, and I want to get back to that, instead of discussing things on the random board of a Kazakhstani textile appreciation website.

Doesn't sound worth it to talk to him.

Conversely, I brought up an interesting psychological study I heard on the radio to somebody *not* in the field.

He proceeded to point out how it sounded retarded and baseless and a worthless study. It seemed very aggressive for no reason. All I could say was, "whoa man, you're attacking a study I probably didn't do a good job of explaining, you should look it up before criticizing it so aggressively".

I try not to talk to him about anything I hear anymore.
