Thing is... what you are calling a mass shooting is usually a mentally ill person shooting 2-3 people. School shootings are worse because kids still have no sense of morality at that age, but when a grown adult is doing it, it rarely goes very far.

It's a result of the US being a more stressful environment, in my opinion. If you grow up with a crumbling infrastructure, it isn't as bad as watching one crumble around you.

They are not common when put into perspective. The country has roughly 320 million people who own approximately 300 million guns. Now consider that there were 372 mass shootings in the entire US in 2015 (going with a recent full year of stats).

The term mass shooting has no specific meaning but usually covers 4 or more people being shot not including the shooter. Regardless more of them occur in the US than anywhere else and it's widely accepted that these kinds of shootings are on the rise while other gun violence has steadily declined.

Still even at current levels it's fairly uncommon considering the number of people who could do it and the number of guns available.
